By predicting all the six knock out games correctly in the World Cup football, Cortana, the virtual assistant for Microsoft Windows phones has added a new fizz to the search engine market. So far in the World Cup knockout stages, Microsoft’s Bing search engine has been perfect in predicting the winners. Since Microsoft added the so-called prediction engine to its Cortana virtual assistant for Windows phones on June 28th, it’s gone 13 for 13,
It was on June 28 that Microsoft added the Cortana service. Soon after Microsoft added World Cup predictions to Cortana, she backed Brazil, Colombia, the Netherlands, and Costa Rica in the final 16 games.
It was Marcus Ash, senior program manager for Cortana, who in his euphoric Tweets explained the Cortana feat in correctly predicting the winners of all the six straight World Cup matches.
Advantage Bing
Many hail the arrival of Microsoft's Cortana as the worthy digital replacement of the deceased octopus, which was the star in 2010 World Cup.
The amazing perfection in its predictions on World Cup results have bolstered the standing of Microsoft's Bing which had also successfully forecast the winners in events such as The Voice, Dancing with the Stars, and the American Idol.
Thanks to the superb predictions of Cortana, now many see it as a rival to Apple's Siri virtual assistant.
Flagship Cortana
This digital assistant is a flagship feature of Windows Phone 8 and is the front end of all Bing queries. Its predictions emerge from Bing's analysis of the track record of teams, weather conditions, type of grass, and home field advantage etc.
Microsoft Procedure
For tournaments models are evaluated on the basis of a number of factors such as previous win/loss/tie in qualifying matches and international competitions. The margin of victory in these contests is adjusted for location advantage.
The model draws heavily on the work of Microsoft researcher and economist David Rothschild, who has made a number of other accurate predictions in everything from elections to the Academy Awards.

Cortana is definitely on a roll.
Not sure if this will change their search engine market share however.
God i hope they take over google, it's about time that evil corporation fell of its high horse

Google.
BFF.
@iamatilla - I remember the '90s when Microsoft was where Google is now. Not sure replacing one with the other would be much of an improvement in terms of semi-monopolistic behaviour.
Having said that, some healthy competition would be good.
It's hard to beat them. They have the best engineers and are moving forward more quickly than the other companies.
Damn it.
Cortana called the Argentina - Netherlands match as well.
I'm tellin ya, these machines are getting a little too smart for our own good. One day, we will all be working for them. They will be our overlords.
Fifa World Cup 2014: Germany Will Beat Argentina to Win Final Predicts Cortana
Cortana's World Cup 2014 predictions have come true yet again. Microsoft's virtual assistant correctly predicted that Germany would beat Brazil and that Argentina would beat the Netherlands in the semi-finals.
This takes her tally to 14 accurate predictions with no misses.
The big question is if her next prediction for the World Cup 2014 final between Germany and Argentina will come true.
Cortana's prediction for Germany vs Argentina
I'm still not sold!
All these predictions were in align with what the betting odds were. There have been no upsets (other than the scoreline Brazil vs Germany). Germany were favorites coming into that match, with Brazil's captain as well as star player ruled out. Was it not predicting for the pool games?
Forget the world cup, if only it could predict which campaigns will be profitable!
