$3.50/day profit with Decisive (17)

$3.50/day profit with Mobile

I'm just trying to keep it simple.

Things should snowball once I get those $3.50/day profits :P

The past few months have been interesting. I made a decent amount of money from the campaigns in my TJ follow along, but a little after ASW, I wasn't doing too well with adult. Shit happens.

At the same time, I was getting tired of churning out adult creatives that would only get ripped within days. I was just getting tired of the niche overall.

So I'm diving into mobile. I'm 100% in.

Back in March, I dabbled in Decisive and Cleanmaster, and we all know dabbling doesn't get you anywhere. I was targeting the US and some non-proven countries, so I didn't get profitable.

A little after that, I had a little bit of success in AdWords Search and Pay Per Call, but I couldn't deal with the weird tracking. I like being able to break things down properly like with Voluum/CPVLab.

Now, I'm back in mobile app installs with Decisive. That's my focus. Gonna try some unlikely countries that have worked for this offer.

6/30/14

Here's what I did today:
-picked out a country to focus on
-came up with 3 basic angles to start off with
-translated my copy with OHT
-made 5 banners per angle
-launched 12 campaigns (4 campaigns per angle: wifi-app, wifi-site, mobile-app, mobile-site)
-got everything approved and running

Unfortunately, I noticed this offer requires approvals on creatives and landers, so I had to pause my campaigns. I should get my stuff approved by tomorrow.

I'm running this app install offer direct linked at first just to limit the number of variables I need to optimize. Once I have an angle that crushes the others, then I'll start testing landers.

All I can do now is wait until tomorrow. On the bright side, for the few minutes I did get to run my campaigns, the CTR's were looking nicer than any campaign I've started on Decisive. Should be interesting how those CTR's turn out once more traffic comes in.

Looking forward to my first conversion on this offer.

My original campaign from 6/30/14 tanked.

Between then and a few days ago, I lost a bit of focus trying out some sweepstakes offers in another country, but there were way too many variables to deal with compared to quick direct linking tests with app installs.

I got back into app installs yesterday. Since it was an international offer, I took Charles Ngo's advice of testing out 5 countries. I got the offer's country data from my AM, so after a bit of sorting and analyzing, I narrowed down to my top 5.

Today, after $40 spend for each campaign, I've determined a clear winner in terms of countries. I stuck to an okay angle that worked best for me in the past (not profitable though) and used it for every country.

I only ran Wifi-App campaigns for each country as those had the most volume, and I just wanted to keep this test super simple.

Ended up with about -70% ROI with the winning country, but I know it has more potential than the other 4. I really only eliminated 1 placement as I knew it would bleed money. Some banners were actually at -50% ROI.

Next Steps
I bought an Android phone for spying recently to get some inspiration for banners and landers. Using that info, I'll be testing some new angles, along with landers for each angle, against my original lander.

And for each angle, I'll be testing all the campaign types: Wifi-App, Wifi-Site, Mobile-App, Mobile-Site.

Now I've narrowed down to one country, my next testing goal is to find a winning angle.

Good stuff man! I was in a similar situation and did the same thing. I was sick of spending all my time farming FB accounts and tweaking my cloaker instead of working on new campaigns. I had dabbled a bit with mobile but never spent any real time working on it. After ASW I completely stopped all my FB stuff and have been doing nothing but mobile. I've hit some successful campaigns but it's still very up and down.

Good luck and keep the updates coming.

Haha it's been a while.

Got distracted a bit. Once I acknowledged I was losing focus by coming up with other campaign ideas, I got back into mobile. All in. Balls deep. And to change things up, I went to a different traffic source with lower competition, targeted the same country, and man...what a difference.

I tested around 20 angles on Monday, finding a clear winner by Tuesday. The winning angle had an overall -69% ROI. While the Mobile Cookbook said to shoot for -50% in a campaign angle, I knew there was potential. My other angles were getting -80% to -90%+ ROI.

Yesterday, I focused on banner designs. At this point, I wasn't really worried about cutting any placements, handsets, etc. or getting profitable right away. I only culled the targets that were obvious money pits. My goal was just to find a banner style that stood out from the pack. After testing 20 completely different styles and 10 that were variations of my initial winning banners in the angle testing stage, I'm about to see a clear winner. Just need to run more data to reach statistical significance.

From 30 banners, I'm down to 3. I killed off banners with 0 conversions at 5000 impressions. Then as the campaign gathered more data, I was gradually able to eliminate banners using that Bayesian calculator caurmen recommended a while back. The best banner currently has around 65% ROI. Banner 2 is at 35% ROI, while Banner 3 is at a slight loss of -10% ROI. These banners have around $3 spend each.

As I said earlier, I'm just trying to keep things simple to get the hang of mobile so I'll stick to direct linking for now. Plus, banners are my thing Once I have enough winning banners, I'll test some landers against direct linking.

Next Steps
1) Use what I learned about my best banners to create completely different styles along with variations of the winners.
2) Have 10 banners running at all times as caurmen mentioned in the Cookbook.
3) Eliminate handsets, placements, etc. as I gather more data.

Got one question for you guys. How many banners do you usually run at the same time for a profitable mobile campaign?

I sense the $3.50 profit day coming soon, you guys

^That's the way you do it. Nice one!

Wooooooo!

Profited about $4 yesterday with around $18 spend.

Lessons Learned
1) Once I found some successful banner styles with my winning angle that were getting any positive ROI, changing up the images helped me hit 100+% ROI on some banners.
2) There are definitely times when conversions are lower. I'll look into day parting once I have my banners and other more important variables pretty optimized.

Next Steps
1) Keep testing new images for my winning banner styles.
2) Test new banner styles in addition to the above.
3) Continue eliminating poorly performing placements, devices, etc., although I've been seeing good profits on some banners with the current targeting.
4) Conduct a few tests at my current traffic source to determine the best way to increase volume while still staying profitable - e.g. raising bids, etc..

Next Goal: Hit $10/day profit

If I'm leaving a campaign to ride auto pilot I usually have 1-3 banners max left running.

Thanks, Lorenzo!

I was curious cause it seems like on some sources the less banners I have the less traffic I get over time. It's something I'll experiment with.

Curious how things are going here. I like how you got this small campaign to work.

this is a great thread!

dun mind me asking.. are you using a 320x50 banners and direct linking to the offer?
I am testing a lot of banners on decisive with 320x50 banners but getting a click thru of only 0.89%.

I'm happy you got a turnaround on this but I would like to know what is the payout of your offer if possible, and what is the bidding type you're using (CPC, CPM, Smart CPM) because I don't seem to hit the spot like I see you guys do, that you spend 5 bucks for 3k clicks :P (not those numbers, but I never get as much clicks as I see you do) I only get about 1 ~ 1.5 percent ratio of clicks with my campaigns
