How To Get Legit 'As seen on'?

Hi there,
we are currently developing a SAAS protection-type of product, one of our main goals with our LP is to build trust. We already have some nice video testimonials, trust seals, etc. but one of the best ways to build trust is to get featured in the media, and later put the logo above the fold with a nice quote. (E.g The New York Times "this service is a must for every consumer").

The only way we see now is to get a good PR written and distribute it through some paid aggregator. We have done it in the past but we only managed to reach the "The Sacramento Bee", "Fox3" type of level. Now we only need to get mentioned 2-3 times but we need the names to be big... like The New York Times, USA Today, The Washington Post and similar.

Any ideas on how can we achieve it?

Thank you

Outsource. Contact a PR Agency.

Advertise on them. And then say "As seen on"

Twitter is another option if you can find a way to not be like the 10,000 other startups bombarding their feeds.

Honestly, the best way to achieve this is to think about what's most newsworthy and interesting about your product. That doesn't necessarily have to be features or even benefits - it could be the story of the product ("The SaaS protection app that started as a webcomic"), the story of the founder ("How a fish shop owner ended up founding a security dotcom"), your location for local press, your relation to a popular trend or, well, anything else interesting about your product.

Then contact some journalists who might cover your area - not pitching, initially, just chat to them on twitter. Then mention your product and the reason their readers might find it interesting, once they know who you are, in a short, to-the-point email. Have pictures (pictures are KEY), a more detailed blurb (well-written and in a journalistic style), a free trial, and anything else you can think of that a journalist might need or want, already prepared and linked from your email.

There are lots of great guides on this online - it's a big topic. However, the key thing to realise is that pitching journos isn't that hard provided you think about being helpful to them.

I would generally not advise hiring a PR agency unless you're prepared to spend 5 figures or more on the PR campaign. Hiring an individual highly recommended freelancer, though, is not a bad idea - just make sure that they're well known in the field before you hire, and be prepared to pay more than you think you should!

It's perfectly possible to do a good job of PR yourself, though.

There's a Chrome extension that will let you edit whatever web page you are on and put your own content on it, then take a screenshot of it...?

You can do that pretty easily without any extensions but I wouldn't.

Editing someones site so that you can take screenshots or say 'as seen on' is patently misleading and probably infringes on the copyright of that site.

You'd put yourself in a horrible position legally (you'd lose if someone went after you) especially since you'd be generating revenue using what is essentially a fake testimonial.

You might as well hand the FTC a giant strap-on and bend over with a bulls-eye tattooed on your behind.
