Categories

Here is a topic I have not seen to much talk about, even in case studies, and that is "Categories". Speaking for myself rarely do I ever specify categories when setting up a campaign. Should I be thinking about the relationship between my offer and the different categories when setting up the campaign? I have taught that maybe sometimes an offer may not do so well on certain apps/sites in a category due to the nature of the offer, but never really tested it. Has anyone saw any relations when it come to that?

Uhh, do you mean on Decisive? In general on mobile sources?

This is a pretty interesting topic i've never tested.

@Zeno i'm 99% he's talking about how some mobile traffic sources have the ability to target categories of traffic (aka: types of sites.. casino, dating, auto, etc..)

My mentality has always been to target all and not limit my traffic. -- Instead come up with a angle/landing page thats so good it would apply to all categories. This is because i want the most traffic possible.

You could definitely do it the opposite way and spend much less, test each category and even make custom landing pages to maximize ROI.

My experience with Categories is that they're very dependent on the traffic source: most don't do a very good job of accurately categorising sites.

If you can find the rare traffic source with accurate categorisation, though, or easily blacklist inappropriate ones, they can be more useful - although I tend to end up targeting either individual sites or small groups of sites anyway if I'm doing that sort of campaign.

Yep I'm with Caurmen on this one. I haven't seen a lot of traffic source with a "categories" option, but the ones that do have it available do a bad job of it. Stick to optimising individual sites and apps. What I would recommend is keeping a blacklist of your own. I also come across certainly sites and apps that are always super shitty, most likely fraud. So I block them off the bat when I create new campaigns.

Yeah VERY good points.

Categories are probably not organized well to begin with, and SITEid optimization is a much better way.

Well, it can definitely be effective on adult if you play your angles right.

I haven't tested it much outside adult.

You'd think that Family/Kids type categories would bode well for targeting mums, and Finance would work well on an older demo... but I think every category has its share of duds, so focusing on individual placements is going to be more effective.

Probably a decent alternative to going full RON on certain traffic sources though.
