Is it really necessary to purchase a VPS?
Is there not any software or programme that can track conversions for you? As far as I've read, this is the only advantage to having a VPS compared with just using someone else's landing page and grabbing an affiliate link from a network.
Disclaimer, I'm still a complete newbie at this, but I havn't heard anyone else renting out their out servers anywhere else so far. Apologies if this is such a newbie question!

Use Voluum.com, then you don't need a VPS.
Plus voluume is free now

Thanks! Is this the standard software people use to track their conversions now? I read the 2013 guide and all thats talked about is VPS's.

Voluum is cloud-hosted but again if you plan using landing pages ( which at some point you have to ) , you will still need to use a VPS.

What do you mean by just using someone else lander? I feel like you may not understand some fundamental concepts here...
You can't just direct traffic to someone's lander and make money. You need to host that lander, even if someone else made it, on your own server or a CDN account that you control.
If you want to use any PHP code on your landers,
it must be on a server, such as a VPS or a dedicated server - either way one that you control.
So, having a server is
not about tracking conversions, it is about having a server environment that you control for hosting landing pages and sites, installing a tracking system, using PHP (dynamic) code, etc.

Thanks zeno, this helped a lot, I think I just got overwhelmed on my first day with reading everything on here.
In terms of using someone else's lander, I meant grabbing an affiliate link from clickbank for example, and using someone elses landing page in order to make conversions, whilst a site like clickbank pays you for the conversions you make. Is this a method that's not used at all on this forum?

In that case the sales page lander is just the advertisers lander, i.e. the offer page. This is just called direct linking.
To put it explicitly, linking from an advert to a URL that takes people directly to the offer page supplied, is direct linking.
Whether you direct link or bridge with a lander is up to you and there is no general practice - it entirely depends on the type of traffic, offer and demographic.
