How Best To Monetize A Facebook Page?

So at my day job I work for a medium sized pet etailer.

I mostly handle SEO for the site, but we also have a Facebook page with 400K+ fans. The thing is the page doesn't generate much revenue at all. Like maybe a couple grand a month. And these are real fans too, not bots or anything like that.

So my question is this: What is the best way to monetize a Facebook page with 400K+ fans? Are there certain products that work well on Facebook, or is it better to get them onto an e-mail list, or something else? We have a budget of several thousand a month.

Is it the official page for the pet etailer site? Why not promote pet-related products or the pet etailer itself? There are offers on CJ.com related to pets e.g. pet insurance, online pet foods, etc.

Yeah. Build a list and them send them products and promotions from the store.

Step 1: Take 1-3 products from the store to do a giveaway.
Step 2: Create an ad (PPE should do fine) and send them to the giveaway, which they can only participate if they subscribe to your list.
Step 3: Send them emails

If you've got several thousands per month, you can get many of those 400k on board (and more if you expand to similar interests). For example, with a good giveaway, each subscriber could cost 10 cents or less (even if it's in the USA).

Ok, thanks for the advice guys! I'm hoping this will be a good opportunity to learn about Facebook marketing on the company's dime

If you have an very engaged Page with that many users, and your owners are interested in making some decent cash ($50k+/month) on it *legitimately* without harming their brand, shoot me a PM. I can make you guys some decent money if the right criteria are met and we can work out a mutually-beneficial deal.

Just be careful on this one. You need to make sure that your employer is fully comfortable with, fully aware of, and fully supportive of any experiments you want to do here. This is your employer's asset, not yours, so you owe a duty of responsibility to your employer on how you manage this asset.

Google, for example, could probably rake in another gazillion dollars a year by slapping ads on their homepage. But for various reasons, they have decided not to do so. Similarly, your employer may just want to maintain good will with its Facebook followers, without trying to turn it into an overtly commercial relationship. At the end of the day, it is up to your employer to decide.
