I often have this problem when I'm thinking about deals i can market online.
I think I can create an awesome newsletter and sell a ton of products that
are somewhat related or could be spun to be related to the audience.
But I'm pretty sure building an email list for every offer you market is
not really a good move.
I have no idea if that's true or not though since I'm a newb.
Do you guys build email lists routinely? Or decide against them?
Why or why not?
I don't build lists routinely. That's partially laziness, but you're right - they are a lot of work.
I'd treat a listbuilding exercise as a separate product, rather than an adjunct to an existing campaign or product. Build the list, cultivate the list, and you have a long-lasting asset!
I've started list building almost 2 months ago.
Both lists are growing steadily, one list I grow with providing great value to my readers on my blog at iamattila.com, the other one is a niche project I started to find the most cost effective way to list build, and we're utilizing social promotion there - not paid, but engaging people through taking part on the social sites (facebook, twitter, pinterest, google+, youtube, instagram)
for my social list building project i employ a full time grunt worker who updates, likes, befriends, and talks to people on the social platforms, and a writer who writes articles (problem/solution) posting them on the blog, and then referencing it on the social sites to build traffic
That's intriguing attilla.
I have always thought of building a ton of authority-style email lists in a bunch
of niches and hiring the right people to produce the content.
Someone once mentioned on here about Finch's empire strategy post being
really good about email marketing, but couldn't find it.
They said it was a premium post? Not sure if that has a reason why I couldn't
find it.
I would wager the vast majority of what little money I've earned online has
always come from email marketing.
But then again, I have never really done much outside of attempting to get
opt-ins and then selling them a product.
I live off lists....
I was hanging out with a huge product owner in Thailand the other day. He showed me in ONE mailing the day before I arrived, he made $17,000! Because he has a BIG ASS LIST! =]
I agree.
I imagine with email lists though you need to be promoting a higher quality set of offers to keep them loyal to you.
I seem to notice many products, even ones with high gravity on cb, have a lot of negative reviews for being shitty lol.
How do you go about qualifying a product or offer as quality to keep your list happy with you?
why not just buy it your self and go through it with the mindset of your target demo.
I'm sure you'll be able to figure out if it's shite or not ... and also it gives you some great insight into the product which will help you market it better.
Maintaining the list is a lot of work that is more related to traditional copywriting and marketing that straight up-front affiliate stuff. If used correctly it can allow you to run a loss leader and then recoup on the backend as it is basically a continuity program.
Personally it is not my thing so I never got real serious with it in the past, but coming back to marketing I would look at a way to sell the leads since you already have to demographic data from your traffic source. I would also look at building the list and selling to someone depending on how responsive it is.
@eidolon - if you're looking for Finch's Premium Posts, they're not on his blog but are separate ebooks.
