Mobile Adult Follow Along- Must Make $100 No Matter What

Hi all,

Last year I quit my job to travel around the world. Started adult 3 months ago, I spent around $1000 so far but haven't been able to make any campaign work. Last week I moved to a less saturated GEO.

I decided to write this follow along as a way of making myself accountable and get some feedback from you guys. My goal is to make $100 day in 3-4 months.

I am split testing 2 top offers my AM recommended. I use a popular angle that has worked for me before. Landers: Ripped 3 most popular styles. Banner 20 banners total 10 banner style A, 10 style B. I use static images but will use gifs soon.

Day 1

Spent: $36
Revenue: $22.76
Profit:-$13.34
ROI: -37%

My banner CTR 0.36, not bad considering I'm testing new images.

Day 2

Spent: $36
Revenue: $22.76
Profit:-$7.57
ROI: -25%

Removed the low preforming offer and one low preforming lander with statistical significance.

Day 3

Spent: $30.82
Revenue: $68.18
Profit:$37.33
ROI: 121%

Good start. Not enough stats to eliminate any lander.

Day 4

Spent: $29.5
Revenue: $45.10
Profit:$15.6
ROI: 53%

Day 5

Spent: $30.7
Revenue: $22.55
Profit:-$8.15
ROI: -27%

Day 6

Spent: $30.6
Revenue: $52.62
Profit:$22.2
ROI: 72%

Eliminated low preforming banners. 11 banners left.

Day 7

Spent: $19.8
Revenue: $15.02
Profit:-$4.78
ROI: -25%

I don't know why It went to negative.

05-26-2014 02:23 PM #2 scratch (Member)
Day 8

Spend $16.9
Revenue $7.52
Profit -$9.58
ROI -55%

New competition entered and as a result I get around 30% less traffic. My conversion has started to drop.

Day9

Spend $16.6
Revenue $7.52
Profit -$8.9
ROI -55%

My 11 banners have decent CTR but my conversion dropped significantly. 2 Landers performing almost the same ~30%CTR. Competition seems to be the problem.

Day10

Spend $18.3
Revenue $7.52
Profit -$10.9
ROI -55%

I changed the bid slightly but nothing the traffic is split between 3-4 competitors now. If I continue losing money I will consider testing a new offer. How long should I wait before stop this campaign.

Hmm, looks very good! How close are you to being able to do a second round of landers?

Landers have 100 clicks each. One 17% prob being best other 87%. Guess I could cut the low preforming lander and start a new split test now

05-26-2014 05:09 PM #5 caurmen (Administrator)

Nah, let it run until you have a 90% probability.

Always best to be sure (ish)!

Just for curiosity, my mind loves patterns, your ROI was better when you spend more

You are right! I want to keep spending $30 a day like before but since new competitors entered on monday I can't. The traffic is being split between too many people.

Day 11

Spent: $12.58
Revenue: $22.55
Profit:$9.95
ROI: 79%

My traffic dropped by 60% since last week. I have 4 new affiliates bidding above me. I will try matching their bids to regain top spots. If that fails I will have to go last resort and set 20k budget

Day12

Spent: $6.5
Revenue: $22.55
Profit:$16.05
ROI: 245%

Lucky my conversion rate was high. I got even less traffic today.
Note: only 7% of the traffic (20 clicks) since I matched bid with spot #2 yesterday. Today I will match spot #1, try to get more traffic.

I use Minimum Viable Conversion Rate to cut banners every 10K but recently my CTR has dropped significantly (~0.24%) Not sure if should change images or stick to cutting banners with Confidence Intervals

05-29-2014 12:39 PM #9 caurmen (Administrator)

How often are you testing new banners? It's possible you're starting to see banner blindness kicking in.

I haven't changed banners since I started my campaign... I thought the approach is to cut banners till I have 2-3 left.

Day 13

Spent: $24.9
Revenue: $22.55
Profit:-$2.35
ROI: -9.44%

Finally managed to get real % of traffic. My banner's CTR is 0.22% which is super low. I will create add new banners tomorrow.

Also I eliminated the low preforming lander. Now I'm left with the winning lander

05-30-2014 04:32 PM #12 caurmen (Administrator)

That ROI's pretty darn close to profit! Nice one.

As for banners: I would normally recommend replacing cut banners with new ones, at least until you've tested 20 or 30 different banners. It's wise to test as widely as possible.

Looking forward to your stats over the next few days - looks like you're in a good place!

I hit another 10k impressions...I had 11 banners, 1 qualified for cut, now I have 10 banners. I will add 10 new banner today.

Day 14

Spent: $27.4
Revenue: $30.07
Profit:$2.67
ROI: 9.74%

Day 15

Spent: $27.5
Revenue: $15.03
Profit:-$12.47
ROI: -46%

No idea why conversions dropped so much... I suspect its because of banner blindness.

06-02-2014 01:33 PM #14 caurmen (Administrator)

Probably not banner blindness! I'd guess statistical noise - you tend to see big peaks and troughs between days sometimes. Give it a few more days and keep going with the process.

Can you post stats for your individual banners?

I couldn't run traffic for last few days because of a problem with my Paypal account. I'm waiting for them to fix my account and they are so damn slow. Meanwhile here are my ads stats since I started my campaign 2weeks ago.

06-05-2014 01:06 AM #18 zeno (Administrator)

Wow those CTRs are similar.

How do these images/banners differ? I would test wildly different things to try and break out of this 0.25% CTR average you're sitting in.

06-06-2014 06:36 PM #19 caurmen (Administrator)

Yes, definitely agree with Zeno here. Those CTRs are very similar indeed.

This might seem odd, but try to make sure in your next round of banners, at least one fails utterly. Make sure it's got copy, a CTA, and can be read, but beyond that, try to test widely enough that something falls flat on its face - that'll ensure you're also testing widely enough to see success.

06-09-2014 03:43 PM #20 scratch (Member)

I was quite busy recently, but I ve been running traffic. Recently there is way more competition, they just increase the bid prices then they go away after few days

@ caurmen: I agree, I wasn't testing widely enough... I now use gifs which should outperform static ads and also getting my lander translated with a different wording. Hopefully I can increase my conversion rate.

@ zeo: I was testing very similar ads. Mainly images that worked in my pervious campaign. One of my ads had 0.52% CTR for 1 week and now its 0.22 My new batch of banners are new ideas I never tried before. Most of them I think will fail

Day 18

Spent: $30.8
Revenue: $15.03
Profit:-$15.67
ROI: -%52

Day 19

Spent: $30.7
Revenue: $15.02
Profit:-$15.67
ROI: -%52

Day 20

Profit:-$11.88
ROI: -%62

Day 21

Spent: $31
Revenue: $52.62
Profit:$21.62
ROI: %70

Note:

Day 21 was a good day. I don't know why everyday can't be like that. My conversion rate significantly dropped from Day 18 to 20, I think its because of competition and also low banner CTR. I went to profit because I tried new banners.

What now:

I added 5 new animated ads today. Also I got my lander translated in different wording. I will split test it agaist my current lander which has around 30% CTR.

Ok back in the business. I started the campaign around 7pm yesterday so its not a big deal that I'm in red.

Note: I added 10 new banners, I now have to wait for data. Hopefully I will increase my CTR to ~0.3. The bids are getting very expensive. Bid are about 30 cents more expensive than when I started 2 weeks ago.

Update: I got my lander translated with different wording. Now split testing them against each other.

For past 4 weeks, I was close to break even point but couldn't get to profit. I converted 21% of all people who saw my offer page. I think one of the reasons was my banners had very low banner CTR (0.2%) and even though I used "Binomial Confidence Intervals" to cut banners, I was still left with 15 banners. only one of them above 0.3CTR.

Bad new is that I received an email from my network to pause my offer. When I asked my AM the reason, he said the quality of traffic was very low. I'm surprised, YP usually has great traffic quality.

I don't know what to do, my AM said I should do web for the same offer, but I'm starting to learn mobile and there is too much competition in web.

Things are looking better. I found my winner lander and the winning offer's landing page.

I still need to increase my banner CTR and offer CVR rate.

Yesterday banner CTR 0.15%

Placement D has low volume, I will try more banners and if ROI doesn't improve I will kill it.

With that many data I think the pause was just bad luck.

Some advertisers don't understand statistical significance and tend to make decisions faster than they should.

Get a new offer and give it a go again.
