Before the spread of online payment methods, how did info products get sold online?

I mean, when in Tier1 countries the internet commerce was new, and only 10% of people had paypal, and credit cards to buy stuff online. How did marketers make money? They did everything COD and/or bank transfer?

Direct mail? It sure as hell did well. Just look at Gary Halbert's letters.

Cheque (check) most likely but that's going back to the days when info products were often called books and those marketing them were called librarians.

For early marketing/payment processing, I imagine porn led the way and info products as we know them probably came after Paypal & Clickbank (98-99).

I remember many years ago maybe 15 years selling on ebay, i used to receive cheuqes (checks for you anyone who's not British) and postal orders daily through the post
and for the adult industry with dial up internet they loved to install there .exe dailers which billed your phone bill at premium rate

Haha I totally misread this. My bad.

I remember those porn dialers, and panicking to click X when I was 14 and something started dialing a random US number.
