Am I Targeting This Game on Facebook Correct? (7)

Am I Targeting This Game on Facebook Correct?

Hi ya'll,

I have a question for you. So, I am promoting "Lord of the Rings Online" on Facebook, usually that game is not allowed on social, but my AM allowed me to run it on there. I feel like this is a good game especially with the huge fan base, but I am having a hard time with targeting because it's so broad. Should I be targeting people who like the Lord of The Rings Movies and books, OR should I be targeting people that play MMORPG games similar to LOTRO?

I guess that's something to split test, right? I feel like targeting the LOTR fans is common sense, but maybe less than 20% of them are actually gamers. Maybe I'm just being lazy and frugal here to split test and see. Just wanted to hear some opinions and maybe advice before I start dumping a bunch of money on this offer.

As always, thanks in advance!

This is one situation which would be much easier if FB allowed "interest and other interest" targeting as they do with their broad categories.

Split test it.

IMO, you will likely see better traction with gamers than LOTR fans simply due to the fact that most gamers will know LOTR, most English-speaking people on the planet do, whereas there will be more people who read the books and don't game than there are MMO players entirely (disclaimer, no facts whatsoever).

Pro-tip: build a list of games similar to LOTRO i.e. ones with medieval like settings. The Witcher, Elder Scrolls Online, Dark Souls, Oblivion, Ultima Online, Dark age of Camelot, Mortal Online, etc. ~le google.

Seriously, I was hoping that Facebook actually did that. Would make life so much easier as far as targeting people, but I agree with you a lot about targeting more gamers than LOTR fans.

Thanks for the advice Zeno, always great advice. I'm going to google more games that are similar to LOTRO and split test from there.

Use graph search. Just type in the search bar "Game pages liked by men who like The Lord of the Rings Online and live in United States" and get some ideas.

Yes, that's a good idea too.

I tend to not recommend Graph searching because it's unavailable to me in NZ and I have to connect to FB via a VM/VPN on a US-based account just to do it so can never be assed.

If you find people who like LOTR and like games via Graph search you could also build a lookalike audience from that list.

Dude thats actually a really good idea. I forgot about Facebooks stupid graph search. It's pretty broad, but definitely gives me a good idea of games to target. Thanks bro!

Random LotRO tip: LoTRO is a pretty old game, so if you're targeting MMO gamers, they'll have likely heard of it already. One angle to get around that would be to focus on their expansion content - they're steadily adding new content, and some of it might be enough to tempt people to sign up, particularly if they're also Tolkien fans.

Here's a link to their latest patch: http://lotroplayers.mymiddleearth.co...otes-released/
