How to load/track phone # for adwords

Hey guys,

I have an seo client that wants to start ppc. They currently have a wordpress site. I want to setup a different phone number that loads on the website when the traffic comes via the adwords campaign for tracking purposes.

What is the easiest way to do this? Any ideas?

Thanks!

I believe www.twilio.com can do this.

You just need to parse the gclid data in the url. If that exists show your adwords number, else show the SEO number. You may also want to set a cookie so you know that they are an adwords user if they visit the site later on.

Don't listen to these nutters - Use commercial solutions for client work like this e.g. http://public.ifbyphone.com/

The punchline of course being that you increase their monthly for tracking, provide reports and YOU own the account. Gotta build in those retention hooks with clients!

Thanks everyone for chiming in!

I actually setup a twilio account setup and a number a while ago. However, I have no idea where to get a script to swap numbers, where to add the code, set cookies etc. Can you point me in the right direction?

Thanks!

If you already have a separate phone number in place, it should be a case of checking for the existence of the relevant Adwords GET parameters, then displaying the AdWords number if necessary.

Having said that, the absolute simplest way to do this would be to create a copy of the page that the clients want Adwords traffic to arrive at, and include a different phone number on that page, then direct AdWords traffic to that copy and leave the regular page where it is.

You can then extend this to customise the page for individual AdWords ads, keywords, etc.

Thanks caurmen! I actually was working on that, made a replica site and directing adwords to those 'copy' pages. I was just thinking that maybe the seo and ppc to the same site might complement each other and be more of a benefit??

@netpoint - I wouldn't set up an entirely new site - just a duplicate page on the same site. Call it index_2 or something.
