Should I be paying for backup services for my server? (7)

Should I be paying for backup services for my server?

Hi everyone,

I use Beyond Hosting for my server. I've periodically been getting emails offering their backup service. It sounds like it starts at 10/month for 100gb storage.

My questions:

-Should I have server backup. Intuitively it sounds like a damn good thing to have but I have no idea how often it would be needed. Is it enough to justify the costs? The obvious answer is yes. It seems cheap and it sounds catastrophic if something DID happen.

-Has anyone used BH for backup services? Do they have a decent deal? If not, what other services are good for this?

Any input is very appreciated.

Thanks,
Evan

Personally I just use something like Dropbox and have all my server/domain content on there - all landers, scripts etc are organised somewhere in some folder. I used to have folders mirroring my server content as well e.g. domain.com with all content in there but got sick of it.

IMO it's more useful if you need to make sure the server can be resurrected asap if something catastrophic happens, e.g. tracking server implodes and you need to get access to the stats and get the tracker live again. Personally I would opt for load balancing between different servers but that takes a bit more technical effort than a backup solution.

Maybe the easiest way about this would be to answer these questions first:

Do you use any 3rd party server backup solutions?
Do you do manual server backups yourself? Would $10 a month save you money if you could invest the time needed to do it elsewhere?
Do you have mission critical projects on that VPS?

It's a very affordable backup service. If you are hosting your tracker on that server and use it, you probably want to have some kind of backup solution in place.

I would go for it. It's one of those things that you maybe don't use for 2 years straight, but that one day that shit will happen you will get running in 20 mins.

I remember happening to me some time ago, if it wasn't for backups I would have stopped my camps for 1-2 days to fix stuff.

Before this I never used the backups before but it was well worth it. Just 30 mins of downtime and I was running.

Also I suppose the backup they offer is an FTP one, I like more r1soft.

Thanks for the input guys. Will spend some time looking into it all later.

Stan,

To answer your questions
1. No, not currently
2. No, I'm a server idiot.
3. If by mission critical you mean, everything I've been working on. Then yes.

http://whms3backup.com/

Amazon storage is pretty cheap for a few sql dumps etc.

I've a site that dumps a ton of data into amazon each week, and it costs peanuts..

Also: http://features.cpanel.net/responses...-backup-option

Disclaimer.

I've not used that service up top.. I coded a cron server dump myself.

Our FTP backups integrate in WHM and you can download and restore a backup at nearly line rate, way faster than r1soft.

Its as simple and painless as backups can get. I think our per GB price is pretty good considering theres no wait time and no speed limits.
