got approached by a membership site owner to do some promotion for their new membership site.
originally we were talking about seo work and i guess because of the influence from being in these forums, i suggested seo work might be slower and that they might get a better ROI with paid advertising (lol, shooting myself in the foot)
anyway, was wondering if anyone has done much in the travel niche and could give some insights. from my limited experience, i think it would be ideal to setup a lander for collecting the email address and market to the list on the backend about signing up as a member (since the one-time sign up cost is high)
the focus currently will be for the Canadian market only and i am thinking to use either facebook or ppv... which traffic source do you think will be more appropriate?
thank you in advance for your thoughts
well you need to look at it from a CPA basis......
what is a customer worth to him and what kinda ROI does he want to run......
eg....his avg signup makes him $500 he wants a 100% ROI you have a $250 CPA to work with......you should have a one-on-one with him and help him understand these metrics....
esp so that he doesn't flip when you tell him that the leads your are sending him are $100 each.....
he hopefully will have some kinda number he can give you....then once those things are defined.....you can look at options for traffic and the like.....every traffic source is a little dif....if you have a high CPA the you can go big and attack a very large reach with display/fb/search......if the CPA is low then it kinda limits this reach and you have to go more niche like.....with highly targeted FB camps, maybe some ppv, and google content perhaps....
defining metrics up front is CRITCAL to the success AND a happy client
thanks for the response polarbacon! this is a great point, let me see if this make sense:
- for example, every signup for the membership site is $300 one-time, then every month is around $20 recurring
- assuming average lifetime of a member is one year, then each sale will be around $300 + 240 = $540
- if he wants 100% ROI, then there is $270 to work with to get 1 sale
since he hasn't done anything online, there is no conversion rate to work with or estimate from.
assuming his budget was $1000 a month and the above metrics, what would be a more ideal traffic source to go after then?
(this is very interesting understanding your method of approach polarbacon)
the site is search friendly, but i don't want to dabble in the adwords even though i have not been banned before.
interesting insight on how it could be difficult to get people to pull out their credit cards... maybe a lander capturing their email only is the best option then?
we haven't talked about the payment details but it seems like he wants to setup a profit share agreement, which basically means it should be based on performance and is like any other cpa offer... except maybe i will set it up on a per email captured rather than a per sale basis
just wondering, is there a reason why ppv would not be a good starting place? i have seen travel sites do banners and media buy, but i guess i haven't seen much on the ppv networks?
