Zeno's Entry-level Guide to FB

Note: FB changes a lot in the course of a year. I will be going through and updating this guide shortly, so for now it is great but not yet at Zeno standards.

Facebook is a traffic beast an everyone knows it. Volume, international traffic, virility, deep granular targeting -everything a marketer wants!

However, as an entry point into the world of internet marketing it is certainly fickle and unforgiving.

There are many traps that newbies fall into and a plethora of questions are always raised, often repeatedly, here on the forum.

So, let's go over some of the basics of the FB advertising platform:

Part 1 - Platform Basics

Part 2 - Campaign Beginnings

Part 3 - Campaign and Ad Creation Basics

Part 4 - Facebook Ad Types

Part 5 - Tracking Campaigns and Geo-redirection

Part 6 - Optimisation and Tips

Part 7 - Changes Worth Noting

Appendix 1 - Sample Gaming Creatives

Appendix 2 - Gaming Cheat Sheet

Appendix 3 - Direct-linking to Mobile App Installs

Using Conversion Tracking More Effectively

If you have specific questions try to keep them in the the relevant thread. This one will be stickied as your go-to table of contents.

I am sure Zeno (or anyone else who has been in academia) would agree, "You write like someone with a PHD" is actually not a compliment

04-04-2014 08:40 AM #5 zeno (Administrator)

I have been tainted.

Funnily enough, the kind of writing I do here on the forum would never pass muster when it comes to academic writing, e.g. thesis, papers. Even my short emails to my supervisor are more concise and well-written!

I was just about to complain about not having a step by step guide, then here it appears! You rock!

Pass mustard?

Don't even want to imagine what that means.

Lol! Good spotting, damn typing muscle memory can pop out some crazy things.

I regret that I have but one "thanks" to give (per section). This is AWESOME stuff - you rock.

Cheers Zeno!

This one of most detailed guide to date on STM.

Was just looking for this kind of tutorial. Love it!

This really helped explain quite a few questions I was working on answering/testing. As well as a ton I'm sure I would have had in the future and probably many I would never have known I needed to ask.

Indeed.

If there ever was an Outstanding Teacher Award for Internet Marketing, zeno and caurmen would sweep all the votes.

would LOVE to know how the fuck to get my dating ads on there.

they told me on the phone that they aren't accepting any dating offers now. Told them we aren't a dating site, we sell dating INFO products, they said doesn't matter.

Any advice? (other than cloaking)

04-06-2014 11:12 PM #18 redrummr (Member)

Cloak ^

When you can get 1c clicks, you don't need to be direct.
[pic of 8/10+ lass] "Not satisfied? Discover how to up your game and get what you want.."
Fake (cloaked) page: paid-for PDF levelling guides for 3-4 most popular games (this allows you to bid broad and maintain a plausible revenue generation, in case your shit is reviewed properly).

I run a private cloaking service and supply my guys with a sheet full of every scenario.

Since you're selling an info product, your ads will not get reported for content (people won't see tits at work when they click on the ad, right?) and if you keep the image safe-ish but borderline (not enough to piss people off) then you're good too. This could be huuuge profit for you, product-owner dconstrukt!

04-07-2014 12:29 AM #19 zeno (Administrator)

My advice: establish a hard-line with someone experienced and knowledgeable in those matters e.g. redrummr!

Given that FB made dating white-list only you're unlikely to get any leniency here... it's a global rule now so you'll be lucky if any reps bend the rules or their perception of them for your sake, given they may put their heads on a chopping block.

04-07-2014 02:31 PM #20 dconstrukt (Member)

redrumr... thanks dude... btw ...your inbox is too full... you cant get any more messages. Pasting the reply here:

I hear you gotta buy fb accounts and shit?.... and they always get shut down?.. always figured it was a cat and mouse game... didn't realize it would be something viable for me. Keep me posted on your cloaker too... love to check it.

zeno - ya... i tried on the phone with them... no luck, rumor is you gotta spend 100k a month to get on it right now. (might change in the future)

Hi Zeno,

First of all, congratulations for this awesome guide, really good work!

I have a question for you if you can help...

I have a friend in Europe who has created a Facebook campaign which targets the Canadian market. For 10 ads, 3 were approved and the others have been disapproved. Then, all ads are disapproved. I checked the CPA offer on MyWOT and is expected to be approved (it's a MMO game). However, the ads send traffic to a landing page which has links to the CPA offer.

Are his ads disapproved because there are links to the CPA offers on his lander or because he is in Europe? I'm pretty sure that the fact that he is in Europe is not the reason to have his ads disapproved but I ask, just in case. The target market is Canada, but the offer is also available for the USA.

Thanks!

04-07-2014 08:57 PM #22 zeno (Administrator)

Hard to say without more info or a closer look at the setup.

Did he give a reason for his ad disapproval?

If going to a lander there are several possibilities:

1) The lander went down, FB checked and saw the destination was unreachable.

2) His ads were sketchy, e.g. played the typical gaming blah blah 18+ sexy womans zomg angle, which FB probably dislikes.

3) The landing page linked to an affiliate link which geo-redirected to a non-compliant page. If FB checked the link for whatever reason and saw some prohibited destination, they would retro all the ads. FB will check landing page funnels when they feel like it, e.g. if ads got user complaints, were doing volume, after account bumps, etc.

Zeno my master. Once again..

04-17-2014 07:56 AM #26 telemaster (Member)

Hey Zeno
Thanks for this epic guide, so much invaluable info.

One question though, are Facebook still accepting dating ads? I had a campaign last year that I had paused and just tried making some amendments to. It's totally legit with a kosher image yet it was immediately disapproved.
Done a little digging and it seems like FB are seriously clamping down on dating. Is this a blanket ban? Basically WTF is the deal right now??!

04-17-2014 08:18 AM #27 zeno (Administrator)

Yes, it is a blanket ban. Facebook has made dating whitelist only, which has made it a no-go for virtually all affiliates - at least in the context of compliant ads. They are working directly with only a few dating advertisers, i.e. Match, eHarmony and Zoosk.

Don't bother submitting dating ads, and if you have any in your account that are paused I would delete them all immediately.

First and foremost I just want to preface this by saying....

#1 I'm simply informing you guys because I am really diggin this community and I want to add as much value as I can.

#2 Zeno plz don't take this as me trying to discredit you I just want everyone to know the truth as this topic has been in many a conversations.

I don't know if you guys are familiar with Peter Parks's (AKA Mr. $100,000.00 a day) DNA wealth blueprint but it's a $1,997 coaching program specifically tailored to running CPA on Facebook.

Well fortunately for you guys reading this you should know that I run bizop on Facebook and you can too. You can also run dating on Facebook still. I'm still learning FB from the man Zeno but I bought DNA wealth blueprint and have had conversations with Peter regarding this as well. Facebook does not care WHAT you run only HOW you run it.

Facebook LOVES "Content Rich Advertorials" as well which everyone mostly says you cannot run on FB. I simply say this because if there's anyone who really knows what can be ran on FB it's the guy who makes $100,000 a day on FB.

P.S. for you guys that start rocking bizop, dating, muscle etc. on FB there's going to be a sea of others who think you can't run any of these niches leaving you with virtually no competition.

Looks like I missed those earlier questions.

Yes use the business manager. Yes it requires a personal login - BM's are owned by a personal user and you can create 3 BM's on a single personal user account.

Yes this stuff still works in 2016 in general, though I am in the process of rolling out an updated guide, FB is ever changing but the fundamentals remain.

omg thank you for this post

Guys, can you, please, advice the most relevant and effective tutorial/guide/course for Facebook ?

I was afraid to start on this platform for a long time. Now I feel the need and looking for something to start with.

Thank you in advance!
