Questions on initial targeting and overall spend before retiring a campaign

Hi folks,

Quick questions from a newbie ...

  1. What do you usually target initially when starting a campaign? I.e. just country/OS at first, or do you also go for categories, regions, anything else? Right from the start of a campaign?*
  2. How much do you allow a campaign to spend (as a multiple of the offer payout) before you stop the campaign for good?

* I'm curious for 2 reasons: I'm wondering about reducing my initial spend by narrower target from the get-go, and also just curious to learn about what's good to target and why at the start.

1. It depends on the source and the offer. What targeting does it accept? A lot of people start with one country and four campaigns. wifi & apps, wifi & sites, carrier & apps, carrier & sites.

2. 3x CPA is a general rule per target. HOWEVER! Take that advice with caution. Don't go beating each and every target to death if none of your targets are getting conversions. You need to look at your campaign over all too. Make sure you are hitting decent ad & lander CTRs. What is a decent ad & lander CTR you ask? Depends on your targeting. The more specific you are the more specific we can be.

Thanks! So far I've been trying multiple countries and only 1 targeting combination for each country. For my next offer I'm looking at trying 1 country and 4 targeting combinations instead, and will see how it goes!

Hah, how did you know I was going to ask what a decent ad and lander CTR was

I have heard that .8-1% is a decent ad CTR, so I'm using that as a starter figure (for want of something to aim at really). I'm not sure what a decent lander CTR is at all. I should probably add more info about my landers' CTRs etc in my follow along thread.
