What VPS should I get? And other newb questions.

Hey guys,

I just recentely joined the STM group and have been reading all these informative posts. Slowly but surely I wanted to start, gather all those tools for a perfect start and have been struggling choosing which VPS I should get.
In the Step-by-step post it was suggested to get a VPS from beyondhosting. But I've read a few negative reviews about it and I was thinking that my journey should not fail because of a technical issue.
I read that Liquidweb and Wiredtree are well-known for their good performance, so I checked them out. Since I am not too familiar with aff marketing yet, I am not sure what package would be enough for decent traffic to start out.
Like what RAM is usually enough and/or what specific features these servers should have etc.
If you have any other companies with good servers, hook me up !

Also, since I am really new into Aff Marketing, I struggled getting into some Aff. Networks. I plan on starting with Adult, so I applied for MUNDO media and Clickdealer but could not get in. Do you have any tips on how to get approved, know people who could help me get in or different Networks where I could/should apply ?

Regards,

Anvielol

If you're eying up adult then register at F5 Media - just say you are a member of STM. FYI the network was founded by some of the people who founded this forum and they are totally in cahoots! Just say you are an STM member ;D

With regards to a VPS, my first question is: do you have experience with managing a server? Root access, configuring linux from a console, etc? I'm assuming the answer is no, in which case you need a managed VPS service. I don't know of many good managed services to recommend other than BeyondHosting.

They have certainly had some bad feedback here but these are more than outweighed by positive experiences (remember that dissatisfied customers are generally 1000x more likely to talk about it on a forum cf. happy customers). I was a happy customer in the past.

More importantly, they know affiliate marketing, the tracking systems used and what you need, and have a presence here.

How much do you want to spend on a VPS? BH offer a Starter VPS which is very cheap but limited in terms of custom modding, installation of other functionalities, etc. Make sure to use the coupons found here - http://stmforum.com/forum/showthread...-Money-Coupons! if going down this route.

The higher VPS are more pricey but are more flexible. I never had any issues with BH but be aware that all VPS do not and will not have a 100% uptime, it's a completely unrealistic expectation.

Thanks for the reply zeno .
Yes, I have never set up a server yet, so it would be better getting a managed VPS I guess. I am not too sure how much I should spend, I was thinking about ~100 $ per month for starting.
Is that enough ?
By the way I have a budget of a couple thousand euros I can spend, just for your interest

I would gravitate toward a VPS2048 from BeyondHosting. It's within your budget and will be handle anything you throw at it until you are running some serious volume.

Get the cheaper LiteSpeed (worth it!), bringing it to $95/month.

This is relatively expensive in terms of VPS stats vs price but you are paying for cPanel, LiteSpeed and importantly, unlimited support from the BeyondHosting team.

Leverage this support when starting out to save you time and frustration. Investing in your hosting is an important first step in AM ;D

Hi anvielol,

if you're just starting out and aim to get into it slowly, then you're probably not going to be pushing high volumes any time soon. I'm currently on the VPS starter package with Beyondhosting and its a much cheaper option compared to VPS2048 recommended by zeno above. I'm doing PPV traffic which is one of those that require a hosting that can take heavy loads. So far, doing around 10k-20k views a day and still going strong.

With the right coupon discount, you could get the starter VPS at only $20+/month which is a steal. I've not tried other VPS but Beyondhosting's customer service has been top notch. They reply ALL my support tickets in godspeed (24hours). Unfortunately, I've also had downtime issues but like what zeno has said, if all VPS are not expected to be at 100% uptime, then you can't really find a better deal else where can you?

I've also asked the tech support on when should I be upgrading to VPS2048 and he said once I start getting 30k visitors per day then I should start looking at it. The VPS2048 can handle 5 times the amount of traffic.

Hope to have helped you somewhat.

Actually, not sure what my logic was behind that last post - get the Starter VPS and move to the VPS2048 when warranted. The starter VPS has a huge discount and moving to the VPS2048 later should be straightforward.

Thanks for the responses!

I bought the recommended Starter VPS with a domain + whois protection. I wanted to buy CPVLab in addition to that, but I noticed that I need a credit card for that.
But I don't have CC, only a bank account + pp account .
What should I do? Stick with prosper202 or is there another way to get CPVLab without a CC?

Stick with Prosper 202 for now - CPVLab doesn't offer that much beyond it unless you're doing mobile. It's a bit more user-friendly in some ways, but when you're starting out that budget is better spent testing

You're probably going to want a credit card for a lot of things from now on... and the credit line is useful. I would definitely recommend getting one.

really, for what it is, prosper202 and CPVlabs each have their ups and downs but in the end they both accomplish the same thing. CPVlabs does have an upper edge when tracking mobile though.
