So I'm new still and in my playing around with different types of banners and setups, I've been wondering about fonts. At the moment I'm mostly using boring but clear old Arial, but I've seen other banners with a variety of fun fonts. I thought I'd get a discussion going and see what your experience of fonts in banners is!
So my questions are:
Depending on the OS you target I would try to match that.
So for example if you advertise to Android I would use Droid Sans and so on.
I can't speak about all countries but for Thailand, I noticed better results using Thai Droid Sans and Thai Sans Lite than the traditional serif fonts. They look quite different from each other.
Also, for Korea, I was having a hard time getting the fonts to be bold enough without duplicating the layers over and over. Then I got a Korean headline font and it made my job a lot easier.
But will it not slow down the speed of your page since you have to retrieve the droid sans font from Google, or is there no need to do so since it is an Android? And does the same apply to the thai version of droid sans?
Ah my mistake didn't even notice the thread was only about banners. But then we are on the same page when it comes to using non standard fonts in the landers.
I don't shy away from web fonts anymore... They look better in most cases and their usage is widespread, so most devices will have cached some of them. Open Sans and Droid Sans for instance - both heavily used by Google and Android, respectively.
Have you split tested this Zeno? Because just recently I've tested a lander with droid sans vs arial and the droid sans had a significantly lower ctr and this was for an android campaign.
Nope haven't tested for mobile stuff. Who knows if they will work better than non-web fonts, but using them isn't something I would disregard based on contribution to load time.
