Solar Panels on Facebook - $xx,xxx net
Okay I've been a lurker for too long. Here's a simple campaign that did like $20k profit in 30 days. This was a year ago, but hopefully you should be able to pick up a few things and apply these lessons to your future campaigns.
Offer: Eco Experts - Solar Panels UK
Network: Neverblue
Traffic Source: Facebook
So this was a Solar Panels leadgen offer in the UK paying about $9 I think when the user requests a free quote. Here's what I did before I jumped in:
1) Hit up my AM and got the payout bumped to $13.
2) Did some reading about solar panels in the UK and learnt that there's a government incentive for switching to solar panels - they can end up making like £17,000 tax free after like many years or something.
3) Since there is a government incentive, I wanted to use pictures of politicians. So I did some research and found a poll which had a list of politicians ranked based on how much they were loved and hated. David Cameron topped the hate scale and Boris Johnson topped the love scale.
4) The payout was good, my EPCs high, so I didn't need a very high CTR, I went broad and set the bid at $0.60 CPC. My EPC was at about $1.
Ad copy:
New Government Incentive
Shocking news! £17,000 Tax Free for switching to Solar panels this month!
Images:

The first 2 images of both Cameron & Boris converted the best.
I don't have this FB account anymore, so can't post a screenshot..but here's how it turned out:
Period: 30 days
Total Spend: $28,000
Total Revenue: $54,000
Chargebacks: $6,000
Net Profit: $20,000
Hope this got some ideas going in your brain.
Will try and post some more case studies in the coming weeks. Cheers!

Man awesome case study!
I think a lot of people often forget that there are more campaign out there than the 5 or so niches/campaigns run by the affiliate herd.
You put your brain to work, kept to the basics and was rewarded because it. I'd love to see more affiliates trying out unique ideas like these.
Great work!

You ran into no issues using UK politicians in your ads? Or is that why you stopped it after just one month of good success?

Nice!
The image manipulation you did is particularly cool - very nice, eye-catching stuff.

I would be bothered by that rate of disapproved leads. 6k? cause if its ledgen you didn't actually have chargebacks.

Yes, by chargebacks I mean disapproved leads....people who didn't pick up their phone / put in wrong information etc.....Neverblue called it chargebacks because they already paid us for the leads and had to take out $6k from the final week's payment. I have no idea why there were so many bad leads, they even sent us a sheet with the list...half of it was like xxx,fsgjksf,shfsfh@gmail.com...maybe people were trying to get to the next page in the hope of finding some info about the £17,000 incentive. Rest of the people in the list couldn't be reached.

I didn't run into issues, maybe FB won't like it if you used pictures of Obama...but there are so many lesser known politicians you can use in your ads in other countries and even target individual states and use pictures of politicians people in those states will recognise. Any offer that can be linked to some government policy has a good chance of working if the user sees a local politician in the ad...builds authenticity I think. If somebody pushes shady offers with these pictures, they might get into big trouble. So use with caution!
I stopped the campaign because the CTRs were going down along with my ROI. And new regulations came up about how you can use the £17,000 incentive in your pitch. So I kind of lost interest.

Interesting guide, did you test any other style of images? I'm cooking up some crazy CTR ideas in my head

Tested a few angles at the start along with my incentive angle:
Cut Energy Bills by 50% (shocked faces, burning money)
1 Trick to lower Energy Bills (images same as above^..this one actually got good CTRs, but the CVR was poor)
[location][girl] pays 50% less on Energy bills, find out how! (pictures of hot UK chicks)
Didn't try other styles of images for the incentive angle though.

and here's your current incentive.. Green Deal ends in the UK in June. If people get there solar and other energy saving insulations done, the Government will take the savings from their bills to pay for it.. like an advance..
https://www.gov.uk/green-deal-energy-saving-measures
http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/utilities/green-deal
There's a company on affliate window paying £20 a valid solar lead and £15 for windows..
Go get em..

Great writeup Manu, really shows that you don't need to put in hours fiddling around with landing pages to make some nice cash.
Probably a good twist: mimic the offerpage and collect the email address, then prepop that to the offerpage if possible.
UK people looking to save money is a nice audience to blast other money-saving offers to. Anybody remembers the 'energy companies hate this electrician' stuff? Matching product for that list.

Good idea, although you'll want to get an opt-in to the list after collecting emails. The UK has some pretty unfriendly anti-spam laws!

Pretty good stats on them also.. £1.61 epc.. so what's that? Nearly $3?

I just saw this on the STM newsletter.
Just wanted to add that this is one industry we are killing it in when it comes to SEO. I've never thought about running ads for it.
Great case study. Loved the Cameron images!

Nice nice, those will bring in high quality leads. Similar thing i did once that worked really well for another niche was the words "homemade kit". That line absolutely killed it

Awesome case study Manu. Thanks for sharing.
Question: how do you come up with offers like these to promote? That are not necessarily in the mainstream but good for making some quick cash.

With many of these success stories posted on STM (and elsewhere),
blindly trying to copy the campaigns will usually get you nowhere.
Instead, when you read these success stories, you should look for the specific exportable insights which you can use on your activities. There are at least 3 here that you can apply right away.
Great advice! Thanks for the great post too!

One tip that I've used to find out-of-the-way affiliate offers - any time you find a product you like on the Web, be it ebook, software, physical - check their footer for an affiliate link. They're becoming more and more common. Mostly they'll be CPS, but there are some real gems out there.

I try to set some time aside every week to try offbeat things. It can be a new offer nobody cares about or some lander style that's not from the AM space - ex: rip a top brand's successful lander and test it.
There are so many offers for which advertisers are willing to spend a lot of money, but many of these offers don't gain traction as affiliates generally stick to stuff that is popular now - and not what's going to be popular soon.
Running with popular niches is good, but we need a healthy dose of new things to keep evolving as an industry

Thank you
If anyone owns a Tesla, there could be a big opportunity for you, they are giving away model X's to people who refer 10 people for a model S. Owners only, unfortunatly.
