[Twisted] Tips for all the Major Adult Placement Types (6)

[Twisted] Tips for all the Major Adult Placement Types

As if we didn't have enough variables to tend to - offers, landing pages, banners, networks - let's throw another in to the mix: banner size.

Or more specifically, placement types.

Take PornHub, one of the 'daddies' of adult dating placements. There are multiple placement types, each accepting a different sized banner.

You've got:

300x250
315x300
950x250/900x250

When you start covering the other big adult websites, you can expand that list to include 468x60, 728x90, 160x600, 120x600, 160x1000, 250x250 and many others.

Do all of these placements perform the same?

No.

Not at all.

Here's a look at some of the differences between placements, starting with the jump off point for many affiliates:

300x250 placements

By far the most popular placement, and one that it is difficult to optimise because it is the most popular placement.

Launching a RON 300x250 campaign is a surefire way to Get Volume Fast.

Here's the problem:

Not all 300x250 placements are created equal.

Some are placed enticingly next to the video (NTV) on your favourite hub site. Others are shafted to the footer next to 2 other banners with a CTR that will detonate your RON campaign.

It's extremely difficult to launch a RON campaign in a 300x250 placement and get profitable straight away. You need to bid high enough to get quality impressions on the NTV spots, but doing so will blow a fortune on footer ads.

For those of you running Exoclick, this is worth remembering.

If you're running a 300x250 RON campaign, you do not want to select the RON option. Select the premium option and then manually opt-in all of the NTV placements while skipping the footers and video overlays.

Alternatively, you could setup a campaign with a lower CPM targeting only footers.

It's good practice to keep them separate.

If you select the default RON option, you will get a jumble of impressions from all over the page. Optimisation will be a royal bitch.

My favourite types of 300x250 banners are:

1. 50/50 image/text splits where the colour scheme matches the target site.
2. Cartoon blowjob animations.
3. Full-size 300x250 shagging/handjob animations with text overlaid.

As a rule of thumb, the further down the page your banner appears, the more abrasive you need to get with your creatives. Chat windows are naturally a good option with this placement, especially in footers - but be sure to add a chat element to your landing page to bridge the user's expectations.

160x600 placements

This is one of my favourite placements.

It's much easier to predict the banner's location on the page.

The 160x600 lends itself to right sidebar, or left sidebar. You can't hide it in the footer.

While this is useful to know, you might also consider that your competitors know it already. Which is why 160x600 placements are generally more expensive for the best traffic on platforms like Exo and Ero.

I love the quality on [good] 160x600 spots. They offer an excellent landing page CTR, and the strongest conversion rate of any placement (except maybe the 160x1000!).

If you have a 300x250 or 315x300 banner converting well, bust open Photoshop and split it in half and then re-paste vertically. Also test stacking two 160x300 banners in the same placement - one text-heavy, the other mainly image with text overlay.

My fav type of banner? Well, it was mentioned on this forum a while ago. Go Google "amateur on/off".

If there's one golden nugget for this type of placement, it is definitely the 'progressive striptease' -- I'm sure some of you know what I'm talking about!

468x60 placements

These thin bastards have driven me to insanity on many occasions.

On nearly every website I've tested, the 468x60 has driven a weaker landing page CTR than every other placement on the same page.

I try to offset this by using banners that are designed to trap clicks rather than sell the offer.

You may recognise one of my staple favourites.

It's a blank banner with two words: ENTER / EXIT.

To counteract the low landing page CTR, I try to deliver a large volume of clicks.

Sometimes it works, usually it doesn't.

I'd love to hear your own thoughts if you've made this placement work.

Note: 468x60 placements, due to their usual location in the header or below videos, are some of the best candidates for 'camouflage banners'. Match your colour scheme to the website for guaranteed extra clicks.

150x150 placements

Overlooked by most affiliates, the 150x150 spot can be cost effective, particularly on direct buys.

The majority of advertisers using 150x150 banners are complete suckers for neglecting clicks. They'll use most of the banner to push their logo and some token titties. Such conservative advertising opens the doors to affiliates, who are much more likely to make every pixel count -- and therefore stand out on the page.

You can still get your message across in a 150x150 banner.

They are particularly good buys if the ad is above the fold and the placement allows animation.

728x90 placements

Much more effective than the 468x60 in terms of landing page CTR, possibly due to the creative freedom of 30 extra vertical pixels.

(If anybody has found a way to fit both tits and ass in to 60 pixels, I want to hear it. Rotating her 90 degrees doesn't count!)

If you're running a RON campaign, you will notice a big difference in CTR across the board on 728x90s. That's because this placement - like the 300x250 - is popular both above the fold and lost in the footer.

Aim to search and destroy the low quality placements accordingly.

If your banner is text-heavy (and most good 728x90s are), be sure to match the colour scheme to the website. Also try to use both the same colours and the same typeface for your landing page.

When these ads blend in seamlessly, they can be devastatingly effective. Some of the best coinage in the vertical.

I like to use cartoon animations for these placements with strong, punchy headlines. Always save room for a big CTA.

950x250 placements

Maynzie dropped a golden nugget in this post where he highlighted the $$$ in 950x250 placements.

He's right.

The irony is that a 950x250 banner is simply three 300x250 banners in a row with a slice of padding. Every affiliate has these banners, and very few actually adapt them for re-use.

While I agree that you should be testing the 3-banners-for-the-price-of-1 schtick, I generally find that one larger banner with a very big headline is more effective.

There's only three ways to find out: test, test and test.

These ads nearly always appear in the footer, so take all you can eat in the animation stakes. Rip out the eyeballs.

Video Overlay placements

How many times have you been on your mid-morning wank break -- forced in to a primal response after 2 hours trawling JuicyAds -- when you find a video you can't resist. The pants come down, you click the play button and BAMMM: you've been redirected to Budbi, son.

The video overlay placement is where your banner is hovered unceremoniously over whatever video the user is trying to watch. Usually a 300x250, they will add to the statistical chaos of your RON campaigns.

These placements are notoriously popular on JuicyAds and you can spot them by the absurd 2-4% CTR.

Keep in mind, these are mostly accidental clicks.

You can go two ways.

You can embrace it and make your banner even more sadistically tempting - through use of a fake play button, or the fake 'x'. Alternatively, you can try to seduce the user with a headline that makes sense given the situation. Like, say, 'STOP: DON'T JERK OFF YET!'

I lean more towards chat style creatives on overlay placements. You can get downright nasty with your initiation of the conversation.

HubJunkyGirl says:
"Hi bbz are you there?"
"That video sucks... I give much better head lol"
"wheres ur profile?"

Test Weird Placements First

If I have to choose between these placements -- 315x300, 300x250, 250x250 or 250x150 -- it's a no brainer.

I'll test 250x250 and 250x150 first, then 315x300, and finally 300x250.

Why this order?

Most affiliates have assembled vast collections of 300x250 images, and 315x300 too (if they've worked on Traffic Junky).

But the other placements are rare. They require custom size banners.

A custom banner requires that you crack open Photoshop.

You would be amazed how many affiliates have never actually created a banner of their own. We work in an industry of Jack The Rippers.

Call it laziness, call it whatever you want.

You can strike gold just by using weird banner sizes that your competition doesn't have tucked away on their desktop (probably in a folder called To Sort).

Testing unusual placements gives you access to inventory where prices are lower, and saturation less of a problem.

Search and destroy!

Aha, so that's where I waste my money

So you're saying, if you can't make money using the more "traditional placements" such as: 315x300, 300x250, 250x250 or 250x150 due to the higher advertising costs in most of these placements, you should try the less traditional ones and you might be able to succeed at making cash because the competition is a lot lower hence the CPM bids are lower too.
