What Are You Working For? (11)

What Are You Working For?

I'm sitting on my laptop writing my speech for the BKK meet up, and a question popped into my head...

Why do I work?

I know a lot of STMers are in a position they do not need to work. They can stop today, and go on holiday for the next 10 years+.

I know some are saving for retirement, others want to leave money for their family. But when does the work stop? Do you have a set goal? Do you need to work all day? Does anyone even feel comfortable at the idea of not working?

Curious to hear your answers!

Here are some of my thoughts:

I work because...

I want to provide for my family.
Being productive gives my life meaning.
I want to have ownership of my time in the future.
I like to help people.
It keeps me out of trouble.
It sets a good example for my kids
I want to live comfortably now and in the future
I enjoy learning new things in pursuit of solutions to new challenges
If you play all day every day it gets boring
Its part of being a man

I'm not close to set for life, but I think I'd keep going in this industry because I enjoy the competition. Mark Cuban had a good quote about it that I really resonated with:

"The sport of business is the ultimate competition. It’s 7×24x365xforever.

I love the sport of business. I love the competition. I love the fire of it. It’s the feeling of the clock winding down, the ball is in your hands, and if you hit the shot you win…all day, every day."

That's definitely what drives me, hitting that big campaign when the stakes are high gives me a rush I can't see going away anytime soon. I think a lot of the really big affiliates out there have that competitive fire that just keeps on driving them.

Just my two cents.

I'm not sure if I understand your question right. I'm a bloody newbie marketer but I have full time job... my motivation is:

"Fundamental money/Security":
1. I want to have enough money so I can enjoy life (ie. visit doctors regularly, making sure I can eat healthy & quality food instead of junk food, even I dont like spending money but sometimes I allow to enjoy certain things.)
2. I want to have enough money so if I need it I dont fall into a hole (ie. if I had an accident...)
3. I want to have enough money if one family members has problems I can help out (should be 1. but they're pretty balanced so I've put it to 3.)

"Other motivators":
1. I have to take care of my parents when they're older (retirement) - no matter what.
2. I'm single and I want kids... I want to provide my future wife & kids a good life. The kids should be able to learn piano or/and to a sports club, should be able to read books. I know a lot of families who cannot spend money for these kind of things. it's a luxury I could enjoy.
3. I want to leave my kids once something valuable I've built
4. Helping others... before I buy fancy cars and stuff I'd def. help first others by teaching, contribute etc. I do it already but on a small sum.

I cannot imagine me not working. I just love to work and to learn new things.

Hope this helps - not sure if this is what you asked for ;-) ???

Each person has their own different reason for working... some would say to have food on the table... money for kids college... and etc...

Anyway... for me... I started to have a reason like... I want to work so I can buy my first car.. (which happened 10yrs ago)... as an employee..

shifted from an employee to starting my own IM... then comes a good success with my IM business... (last 2005)... then my reason changed to...

I want to work/make money so I can hire/help jobless people from my country... I was able to hire 5 jobless guys... who became very good close friends with me...
and I was happy/proud because i was helping them and giving them money to buy food/clothes... even money for their school...
(there was one kid who was working at an internet cafe in my country... and he works 12hours per day... and only get paid... $0.30 per day...) I hired that kid and he was able to go to school... and at the same time providing food/electricity to their own house... he became the bread winner of their family... which made me so proud and happy...

until... Google decided to close my adsense account... which was making $85000/month with a big $70,000+/month expenses (I know I am a bad businessman... but helping your own country men was PRICELESS...)

and so... i had to cut down my employees then servers then CDN and the list goes on.....

then my reason changed to....

I want to work/make money so... I can help a few more people... and try to save this time...

but losing my adsense account gave me a very bad hit... I ended up filing bankruptcy... I owe Amex a whooping $140,000

now... my reason for working changed again....

I want to work/make money so... I can put food on my own table... pay my own electricity... pay my own internet/phone bills... and etc...

Now... im in Affiliate Marketing... and

"I WANT TO MAKE IT WORK!!!"...

and...

"I AM GOING TO MAKE IT WORK!!!"...

so that this time... I can make my family proud and happy for me!

I am not comfortable not working for long periods of time. That is what gets me into trouble. Besides that I do AM because:

1. My parents have no retirement plan. They have supported me immensely and I not only owe them but want to support them.
2. I want a Bentley and house in the Hollywood hills. (I'm all about the simple things)
3. I want an office in Downtown L.A or maybe West Hollywood/Century City.
4. I like travelling, it would be cool to work while travelling.
5. To be a job creator, what an awesome feeling! (Even if its only jobs for VAs)
6. You are what you do. If you don't work, you are nothing.

Right now I am working 40+ hours a week at an SEO job and have several SEO clients of my own (conflict, I know), as well as wake up 5:45a.m to launch mobile campaigns. I love it. Its going to make one hell of a success story.

That, in a nutshell, is why I work.

I work to achieve my vision, and have a mobile media buying machine that runs itself, like my other business I own for 8+ years now (adult outsourcing company) that works for me.

Once I am done building this mobile media buying business, then I am going to be working on my next dream (I already know what it is, but its a secret)

I work to have Freedom from having to answer to anyone but myself. A man has to have something to work towards in life, without it you are lost, nothing replaces goals, not women or anything else..

I will build an empire.

eh - it pays for the extra pepperoni on my pizza. it pays to travel across the US college towns. it will pay for vacations to vegas, and hence set me up in a position to just have one blonde after another come to my room until my dick falls off or i fall in love. it will pay for me to go to any city in the world and do the "vegas" there. it will pay for impulsive and dream buys. it will provide initial funding for investments with a lower risk profile. it will provide health insuarace, steroids, hgh. It will let me workout more than work. It sharpens my understanding on how to market to mass media and will hopefully provide some initial funding for a project to show to the masses (film/tv etc.).
