Best Way to start Making Banners?

Hello all,

I was wondering what techniques you guys use to make banners. Where do you get your inspiration and how do you usually bang out a batch of awesome pics?

My technique so far is that I Spy on ads and check the ones that have been online the most.

I look for ads then I use Photoshop to try to make a better version from scratch with differences in image, headline, text, etc.

Right now I've only been using 110x80 banners on POF. Since I'm using POFPRO I can just upload the image and POFPRO has a spot to add the headline/ad copy.

Once I finally touch base with a friend who has a copy of Photoshop for me I'm going to start playing around with the 310s.

I've been confused by some of the ads I've found in the POF spy tool. Some that have been there for long periods of time don't seem all that good to me. Although mine haven't exactly been knocking it out of the park so I probably have a lot to learn in that area.

I really don't overthink banner design. Normally my approach is to slap a headline and an image into a Photoshop file, then export that sucker!

It is almost impossible to create a banner that is so ugly it won't convert. Seriously. MrGreen did a competition a while ago where STM members attempted to make the worst banner they possibly could: most of the banners entered still resulted in conversions.

http://stmforum.com/forum/showthread...ase-Study-Ever!

Here's my entry from that case study. Yes, it got a conversion.

If you're looking at banners that have been running for ages, and they look crap, take heart. Banners that look crap work.

Thanks Caurmen. Well I think I will do them myself then.

But wouldn't a nicer banner usually convert better or?

Actually I will do the Banner hit & run method that you mentioned. Thanks!

In the spirit of shitty banners, I crafted this masterpiece. Will see what kind of CTR I get over the weekend, lol.

Currently at .46% CTR. I expect that to come down quite a bit, but currently one of the top 3 CTR out of 15 currently running on the campaign, lol.

Lol that is hilarious!

I wouldn't be very surprised if it ended being the highest CTR banner.

Also how's it performing conversion wise?

Why has no one thanked that man more? People may laugh but changing things up and doing something completely original is what catches attention... especially with adult - how many porn banners has the typical user on those sites seen. My guess? Over 9000.

CTR dropped like a rock after the first day. Cut it this morning at .05%. No conversions. Was worth a shot though.

Great test! Split-test some variations on the idea too, you might hit a winner yet.

I've been finding stuff like this such a tease. I'll start a test, get a bunch of good results with a tiny sample size....and then it all plummets. I totally understand the stats behind it but it sucks when variance makes you think you hit a winner.

I'm working on getting my Landing Page rotation properly setup, and mixing up my LPs at the moment. 2 LPs for each campaign with 2 color variations for each, for a total of 4 LPs and a DL to judge as a baseline all in even rotation. Seen a lead come in on the first 6 clicks to one of my new landers this morning, which seems encouraging, but I hate to get my hopes up before any significant amount of data is there. Once I have that all in place I will get back to work on testing out some more creatives.
