Working with low volume placements is tricky
I'm wondering how people approach low volume placements, specifically on TrafficJunky. For instance:
RedTube in Sweden: Total Impressions for the entire site is 2.2 million.
Now looking at the NTV A position, the impressions available is 65k. Considering competition or TJ internal campaigns or whatever else, matching the top bids will probably get me around 15-20k impressions a day on this placement. (Sweden also isn't the cheapest in terms of bids, they are much, much higher than countries like Germany)
That by itself is hardly enough to test more than a couple of ads, and not enough to test them with great certainty in a days time. It would take a week or longer to begin to test enough ads, or at least I would think.
Is it advisable to consolidate numerous small placements such as this while testing the same banners across multiple sites? For example, if I had the same set of banners on PornHub A/B, YouPorn A/B, RedTube, A/B, Tube8 A/B, and ran them all at the same time in order to get enough data to determine which ads are winners. Or do you think this skews data because banners will perform differently site to site?
There are countless placements like this where the traffic isn't big but there are opportunities, but how do you approach these placements in a way where you can get actionable data quickly?

I wouldn't combine placements - as you say, they'll perform differently depending on the placement.
For small-volume placements I usually just stick some adds in rotation and leave the data to accumulate. Sure, it takes a while, but it's very reliable when it comes in precisely because it has been gathered over a week or so. Any because people tend to overlook small placements in all sorts of verticals, they can make up in stability what they lack in volume.

Exactly, every placement is almost a campaign on its own. Thats why I go through the optimisation process on every single placement on its own, I rarely just scale whats working over onto other placements, although what I do scale is the offer/lander. Different placements need different attention, when a users watching a vid whats gonna make him/her click (NTV) vs a Topright on the mainpage before they watch a video, very different.
Also, different sites are different colour schemes, use that to your advantage. I think its been touched on this forum before, but making ads seem like they're a part of the chosen tube can get bullshit high CTR's. PHub- orange, black ads etc with a play button on them = CTR to the maximum!
But also in saying this, most of those smaller placements are gold mines for the noob/intermediate looking for some ROI/bank building. They're quite low for cpms, and in most case are a lot easier to get profitable. I just mentioned on
another post about targeting placements with no competition like the 950x250 footers.
iPad traffic is another goldmine, you can run in countries like denmark/sweden/norway as long as you have a great offer you can literally spend dollars and make back $50-100. I will post a campaign on this when I get a moment, gonna be in transit to Bangkok but I'll try get it up asap. There is still so much money in adult, just don't go where everyone is. You're looking good here Mscimitar keep searching for those spots without much traffic, you've ran many campaigns on POF im sure you can handle it on adult too and make some decent profits
Hope all is well man its been a long time since we chatted!
I realised I went on a complete tangent on this post lol

This. I see a lot of people try to start out on really big, competitive placements. That's going to be a pretty rough ride because you're competing with super-motivated, experienced dudes with huge budgets.
But there are thousands - literally thousands - of placements out there that aren't big enough for the big guys to go at hard, but have the potential for enough profit to get newer affiliates started, with a much easier time of getting to profit.

^Yep, pockets of profit!
Anywhere you can test and make money, or even simply not lose money, is a free education in affiliate marketing.
At the same time, you have to be realistic with your expectations. If you can't get enough traffic to optimise your creatives, then the upside is pretty small even if you stumble across a winning combination.
Doesn't mean you can't take the combination and scale it elsewhere though.
To answer the original question, if I find a placement with limited traffic, I'm generally not looking for a campaign that requires a lot of optimisation. I want something I can plug in and milk, like Maynzie says, for $xx spend / $xxx profit.
If a placement has limited traffic and you can't get it to work while your angles are fresh, it doesn't bode well.
Assuming those angles are at least semi-decent...
