Quick question: I know FB has a 'major' section in targeting setup of the power editor, but what do I do if the major I want to target ('geology') doesn't come up when I type it in the field?
I can do a graph search for people studying geology and I'll find heaps of people, but for some reason geology is not recognized as a major. What do I do now?

I wouldn't bother with 'subject' targeting - the audiences are absolutely tiny. If I target men of all ages in the US I get an audience of 52 million. If I select chem and biology it drops to 1480. On the other hand if I select chemical engineering I get 54,000. Don't know where they get this data but it's clearly unreliable. Geology comes under Earth Science.
If I was you I would exploit graph search using a scraper or otherwise drop the idea of targeting geology majors. Why do you want to do this anyway? Are you selling an offer that only applies to geology students?
Yeah I've designed a punny t-shirt on teespring. It's pretty good if I may say so myself and I reckon it should get some sales.
It seems odd that FB clearly recognises geology as a field of study in the graph search ("People who major in Geology"), but not in ad targeting.
So what you're saying is scrape graph search and build a custom audience?
Exactly. There are several such scrapers out there that cost ~$100 I think, can't comment on their performance.
Problem here is that you're only able to target people who have their education status set to public, but I guess it's better than nothing.
Quick update: I'm getting some seriously solid CTRs with newsfeed ads on these custom audiences. The downside is unfortunately that it's hard to scale, since these graph search audiences are very small (not many people list their job / major publicly). Any ideas on how to expand? Does anyone have any experience with lookalike audiences?
Nope but that would be the logical progression. Use the FB conversion pixel and let it get data, then use lookalike audiences to expand your reach.
