Not at all. Having independent tracking is faster, more reliable, and contains far more information than in-house network tracking. Date will be your most valuable tool. Don't skimp on it.
Having the server is also needed for hosting landing pages.
I'm new to this so I'm sure there are far more reasons why you should have these items however in my mind the listed ones are more than enough to justify the cost/effort.

Yes, I've been finding the same with some of the newbie guides. I'm often still left with questions. A lot of answers I've found by re-reading, a lot by searching the forums, and more by asking questions. I've also gotten a lot done with other site tutorials. For example I just installed POFPRO on my server. Something I never would have been able to figure out without the tutorial provided by the software (POFPRO).
I've found differing information on whether or not to run a landing page. A lot of people will say a landed page is "needed" (ie optimal) while others have said you can start without it (by direct linking). Personally I plan on trying out several landers for my first campaigns. To me it sounds like landers are just another stepping stone in getting them to convert. It affords you more ability to target specific niches, for example.
I'm starting out in the POF dating realm and there both direct linking (your ad>their offer) and landing pages are both options for the offers. I haven't looked at mobile so I'm not sure if the same is true there. I'm sure someone else can chime in on that.
Since mobile internet is slow, squeezing in a landing page will definitely not convert as well as direct, but then again, I might be wrong.
Any mobile gurus willing to shed some light over the benefits of having a server when targeting mobile traffic?

EDIT: Ok, Landing pages and Banners(direct link to the offer) are both constants used for testing purposes to see what yields the best result.

Landing pages - need a third party program to track e.g STM tracker and Prosper
If you have the skills, I'd suggest split-testing between direct linked and landing pages initially to see which converts best. Mobile offers sometimes convert far better with a landing page and sometimes they don't: there's no one firm rule.
