Average Daily Expenses?

Hey Stackers!!

I'm trying to figure out the costs for Bangkok trip ... Can any of Bangkok citizens help with this? Is it cheap? Expensive?

How much average daily should I allocate for transportation food ..etc the daily expenses.

Thanks guys.

taxis are cheap. don't take a tuk tuk, not worth the headache. stay away from the green/yellow taxis, they are known for rigging their meters. solid color ones are the way to go.. different company. anytime a taxi driver tried to make a flat rate "deal" with you, they are only doing it to get more.

IIRC, it is about 200 baht from the airport. they do a 50 baht surcharge at the airport, this is normal.

honestly, except for hotel prices, Thailand really isnt that much at all... even at the bars. bangkok is known to be the most pricey... but still not bad at all. its kind of one of those places where with a tiny bit of effort, you end up spending almost nothing. prices range a massive amount.. depending on where you go

its really one of those places that can cater to whatever budget you have..

i know there are a few people from bangkok here (or thailand for that matter...) who can give a lot better insight than me.

I remember Koh Samui being one of the cheaper Islands.

Yeah I'm not a BKK local but this will be my 4th time there, its a tonne cheaper then the western world. Angry old lady banged it on the head with transport, food is cheap with hotel and daily things you should be able to get away with $100/day don't think it'll be much more then depends on what sort of hotel room you get but food/transport/activities are on the way cheap side

Flight from bangkok to samui return will cost you around $200-300 I think

not only that, if you don't want to fly the train or the bus is a really good option as well.. the sleeper trains are quite nice and unlike other busses which are ungodly uncomfortable, the ones in Thailand allow you to put your seat completely down for a good nights rest. that plus a quick trip to the chemist for some valium and you are laughing.

depending on your budget, the train can cost you literally almost nothing.. I'm not sure about the train+ferry to Samui, but I do recall paying 42 baht ($1.30??) for a train to the Cambodian border.

i mean, non airconditioned wooden bench seats aren't what I would call a nice ride, but basically what im trying to get at is if you have a small budget, you can easily make it work no problem

backpacker for 3+ years... I know a thing or two about stretching budgets

Yeah daily life can be very cheap if you want it to be. Street food will cost you about 1$ for one meal and its delicious. On the other end of the spectrum you can easily splurge 50$ in high end restaurants. Metro and BTS tickets will cost you about 1$ but taxi is so cheap that youre better off taking one unless you dont want to end up in traffic jams and move arounds downtown. Int his case BTS is a must.
Drinks in bars will set you up around 2$ for a beer, 4$ to 5$ if you have one in a gogo bar and about 6$ in a fancy club. Hope this helps.

If you have ever wanted to splurge on a great hotel or a great meal, Bangkok is the place to do it. Spending $300 in Bangkok for a hotel is like spending $1000 in London.

Is Bangkok more expensive than other cities?

Chang Mai, Pai... both absolutely beautiful place and very cheap.

Koh Chang was probably the cheapest place I went. the only cheap Island left.

I was paying 150 baht/night for a room there.

rural Cambodia was the cheapest ive ever seen. $2 bottles of vodka, $0.12 for a pack of cigarettes. I don't recall how much renting a room/food was but im sure it was very cheap

I remember drinking on a rooftop bar in Phnom Penh. $0.35 pints

20 pints later and our bill comes to $7.00

I've been in bangkok for about 3 weeks now. I'm paying around $50/night for a private apartment from airbnb in Thonglo (considered one of the more expensive areas of Bangkok). A meal at a good clean restaurant runs me $15 (I eat like a beast, so it doesn't have to be that much). Cover charges to a good club will run 500 baht (~$15) which includes 2 drinks, but bars on Sukhumvit 11 (where I assume the STM crew will be going to) are free cover. Drinks at good bars/clubs run about 200 baht for a beer. If I go out and on a date and pay the bill for dinner and drinks it'll run me about $35. An hour long Thai massage with run you about $6-10. On a day where I spend money on entertainment, eat out twice, and ball out hard, my daily expenses run around $100.

This can be done for WAY cheaper. You can find hotels for $20/night, have a street food feast for $2-4, buy a bottle of vodka for cheap, pregame in your room and spend $0 on alcohol in bars. If you're really on a budget you can get away with $50/day.

good info indeed!

if you want a nice cheap place to stay that isnt half bad, I can point you to a good place.. although it would be near Kho San Road

Actually I was trying to figure out the costs so I could weigh if its worth going there for me.. but from the people's experience the daily costs there are neglible so it should be fine.

I also have no idea where Kho San Road is haha

Yeah I'm loving Bangkok so far. One of my favorite places I've been. I'd stay far away from Kho San Road unless you like backpackers. Probably better to stay somewhere along Sukhumvit Rd. close to the BTS train. Anywhere in between the Nana and On Nut stops should be good. Nana has more hookers and people trying to hustle you. As you get further away from Nana on the BTS (and move towards On Nut) this stuff isn't an issue.
