PPV on shared hosting - suicide? (10)

PPV on shared hosting - suicide?

As I've been reading up on PPV and getting ready to launch my first campaigns, one thing that comes up over and over again is the importance of hosting. I intend to get a VPS this week (probably with Beyond Hosting as many here have recommended them), but I'm also somewhat antsy to get started. So here's my question:

If I try to run a PPV campaign using Prosper and my shared hosting, am I basically throwing money away? I'm curious to know if it will affect campaign performance so much that a potentially profitable or break even campaign will actually lose money.

I'm guessing the answer is "yes, it's suicide" but figured I'd see if anyone out there has ever tried running a PPV campaign on shared hosting. Like I said though, I'll probably be signing up with BH this week...

Thanks!

I wouldn't.....just seems like a waste.....Its better to wait and do it right....its the data you want....spending money and not getting any or loosing data.... is just like burning money

i have heard cases where the hosting provider simply shuts the account down WITHOUT telling you... probably not worth it to lose data + money

Cool, figured. I'm going to wait until I get my VPS then. Thanks!

Waiting for a VPS shouldn't be a big deal. If you're a bit technical you can get a basic 512Mb VPS from Burst.NET using the code MEMBANK20 to get 20% off. I've had pretty good performance from them, and they're *significantly* cheaper than BeyondHosting. Admittedly I haven't got Prosper running yet (the latest ZIP seems to have the ends of the files missing), but it should be able to hold its own.

I'm on shared hosting on Hostgator with Prosper installed.. I'm a poor student though.. haha. I've tested out quite a few campaigns on it now and haven't seemed to have a problem. I heard something about being able to handle about 5,000 clicks a day on shared. But fair enough, if you're gonna get serious, get some power!

Hey Reuben I ran that exact same setup for a while until I could afford a VPS, but you will notice a pretty big difference in conversions when you switch. When you run any kind of volume because its on shared it starts to lag just a bit when loading your pops and seconds make a huge difference in ppv. For about $10 or so more a month you could get a pretty decent VPS with Beyond http://stmforum.com/forum/showthread...hlight=hosting check em out well worth it and will pay off for you very soon.

I agree with the others - wait until you get a solid VPS. It's really not worth trying to run it on shared hosting.

If you really decide to step into PPV, you'll definitely need at least a VPS to have your tracking software installed. If not, don't do it. I used to be like you, have prosper set up on shared hosting but the results were terrible.

Dont't save the little money because in the end you'll lose more. Good luck brother!

I've got a dedicated server setup nicely for ppv. Should anyone need hosting, just send me a pm or skype. There's no cost, as I'm not using a 1/10 of the resources. It would sure beat shared hosting. Well just thought I'd mention it. Skype is probably the best way to contact me. Otherwise too many pm's.
Regards,
Brian
