STM Koh Samui Island After Party (details inside)

After party is in full affect on Koh Samui!

The STM Crew, F5Media team, and industry friends will be headed to Koh Samui for a little island relaxing. This won't be an organized trip and is mostly just for leisure time with other affiliates, the idea is to just hangout and plan activities/beachtime/nightlife etc once we're all there.

ISLAND = Koh Samui
DATES = From March 18th - 21st.
AREA = Chaweng

The area of Chaweng is pretty big, so i've narrowed down a 1km strip. The distance between "C" and "I" on the map is approx 1KM. Find anywhere between there and you're good to go!

We just booked at Amari Palm Reef (E on the Map)

How are you guys getting from Bangkok to Koh Samui?

02-12-2014 04:12 AM #12 angry old lady (Member)

ill probably book a sleeper train.

looked up the price... 520 baht ($15) for 1st class.. 100 baht for 3rd class

02-12-2014 04:18 AM #13 cdroy (Member)

Yeah I'm tossing up between splashing out on a flight or a sleeper train. So sleeper train to a port and then a ferry over is how it works?

sure is! train to Surat Thani train station then Lomprayah Ferry to Samui

I think the ferry is about an hour.. give or take

you can go through a travel agent. they will book the train/ferry for you

also, make sure you book the sleeper a bit in advance.. don;t just show up at the train station. sleepers go quick.

worst case scenario the buses are also very nice. they tilt fully back.. not nearly as uncomfortable as your typical greyhound

although I'll probably forget and end up taking the bus.. as I always do

hmm so how many people are heading to Samui? 200 people is a lot for that island to handle in 1 group..

I may spend a few days in Phangan after for the hell of it. go to the exact same place where I signed up with my first aff network

02-12-2014 10:03 PM #15 stackman (Administrator)

How long are the train rides?

I don't quite remember.. I do recall bus+ferry is about 8 hours. train is probably much faster as the road is quite curvy

02-13-2014 12:03 AM #17 maynzie (Moderator)

Done the sleeper bus and it wasn't pleasant lol I had to sit up the front of the bus and I just remember getting headlights waking me up haha through the front window, train with reclined seats sounds cool though might be a different experience

Plane is the easiest option I checked and there is like 12 flights per day, but yeah I'm down for a different experience if people wanna get a sleeper train

on those buses, right beside the bathroom there is a small door to the luggage area with all the bags.

a wee bit hot but you can get a good sleep in there

Lets take it a step further and Hike there, and make our own raft?

Otherwise flight!

If you want to do a quick road trip around the island I would definately join you

Just don't crash lol. Lots of tourists get really trashed and drive the scooters and get hurt

They call em Thai Tattoos. From what I remember, Samui's roads arent that pleasant as there is a lot of sand. I don't quite remember though. Samui is a bit of blur to me

Samui roads are not so bad. However you can get some nice "Phangan-tattoos" on Koh Phangan, roads on Koh Tao are even "worse". But it's funny to ride through the jungle.

I would be happy to join you guys as well!

02-17-2014 04:09 AM #24 prateekdwivedi (Member)

A road trip with 200 motorbikes or so would be so buass!

Phangan isnt that bad when it comes to road conditions. Actually, maybe I am thinking about Koh Tao...? I remember all the bikes are fitted with knobby tires due to the poor road conditions

Funny thing about Phangan. Buddy of mine got rear ended by taxi

That's the taxi's license plate jammed in my buddys bike

It was a hit & run.

What about flight to surat thani and then ferry to koh samuai? It seems to be a lot cheaper than direct flight to koh samuai.

02-20-2014 08:40 PM #31 stackman (Administrator)

Last year i saw a Taxi hit a Bike in Bangkok and the guy on the bike did a mctwist 15 feet in the air and landed right on his bum on the pavement. It looked really really bad! :|

I'm now a little afraid..

Sucks,

I'm flying in on the 17th but had to change my flight out for the 19th to get to HKG to handle some biz.

Won't be much partying for me lol.

02-22-2014 11:40 AM #34 caurmen (Administrator)

@stackman - #1 tip I've heard from several people who've gone out to train Muay Thai in Thailand is to stay the hell off the bikes, for safety.

02-22-2014 11:52 AM #35 Mr Green (Administrator)

I got warned last year to stay off motorbikes. I didn't. The roads were crazy and tourists were just hooning around drunk. One guy was going stupid fast through an intersection, so I brought my bike down. It ended up getting a few small scratches. And that's when the scam starts, they tried to charge me 1k US for repairs. They hold your passport, and take advantage of the fact you usually are in leaving the island the day or day after you return the bikes. Scam city.

lots of places will ask for your passport. its becoming more and more common because it is the easiest way for the locals to get what they want out of the tourists, although holding someone's passport is illegal since it is gov't property.

I do recall reading, if you are in that situation, calling the tourist police or the embassy can solve this issue, although it was a while since I researched this. i'll try finding a source on this

you can always call the passport issuer, tell them you lost your passport when you are in your home country and get a new one sent to you. now you have a passport you can surrender. or have one made on Khao San Road

getting caught with a fraudulent passport at immigration is another story

I do something similar with bank cards/credit cards. before leaving the country, I will go to my bank, tell them my card is having issues and they send out an exact copy. telling them it was stolen they will give you a new card with a new number.

one your new card comes in, keep it as a spare. I'm sure almost everyone has experienced bank card issues overseas.. either losing it or having it stolen. its nice to have an exact copy of your cards in your suitcase just in case.

not all banks are able to do this. I know first hand this trick works for TD in Canada and Commbank in Australia

EDIT: y'know what... another idea could be to pick up a rechargeable prepay credit card. not sure how they work, but I assume some accept paypal. lose you wallet and all your cards? load up your prepay credit card

Damn.. I will really miss you guys, especially thinking at how hard you're going to party, but I'm too much scared of what's going on there in TH right now to book a flight

02-23-2014 11:28 PM #42 karim0028 (Member)

One thing i learned in my shit ton of travels is its never really as bad as the media make it out to be... Unless your talking warzone or civil war, almost all these protests and riots are contained pretty well...

02-23-2014 11:31 PM #43 maynzie (Moderator)

^ yah I mean I don't know what its like this time around, it seems to a be a bit worse but I went 3-4 years ago during similar protests and on the AU media it was like do not go etc, and I got there and legit saw nothing my whole time

Mrgreen was there similar time and also saw nothing

02-24-2014 12:47 AM #44 prateekdwivedi (Member)

Its nothing guys. The only negative impact this will have is on the hotel prices!
