Really recommend reading this if organic is a component of your strategy. A lot of companies find themselves paralysed at the moment due to the recent 'recommendations', worried about any moves they may make which could affect their visibility. I get a lot of the sorts of questions inferred through this post, like 'You didn't buy the backlinks, did you?' and 'We're not guest blogging anywhere, right?' and 'You got a nofollow, right?'
They're the most common questions I get these days. Even three years ago, the questioning would have been something like, 'What do you know about inlinks?'
From my experience, these questions are mostly asked by business owners and senior management in enterprises because they've read something on a catch-all news site, not an industry site. They're worried that they're going to get pinged...even sites that have next to no links at all.
I almost never get these sorts of questions from other industry folk, unless they're still finding their feet (I'm always finding my feet; there are levels of feet finding!). If I'm working with other SEOs, it's not even mentioned.
I digress.
The point for me is that adherence after the fact is fine, but to be retrospectively pinged for prior practices that weren't a problem isn't really fair.
As Glen points out, though, Google doesn't owe you, nor you Google. I wish business owners would heed that advice.
Good read
One of the benefits I have of only working with pretty smart clients, but it is a topic a lot of readers ask me and seem confused about.
Thanks for sharing here, glad you liked it!
Very Good article glen. I am fan of your blog.
Massive fan, Glen
Love the blog (and the podcast too) and am here on STM because of your Facebook Ads testing podcast episode.
Really opened my eyes to what can be done and what else is out there. Thanks again
