Hey All,
BACKGROUND
Joined October 2013. Read a lot about AM and decided to start taking action mid-November on POF. Learned how to setup a campaign, a testing process that I understood, tracking, and how to optimize based on my data. I made some conversions but never broke even - I came close but the ad restrictions really turned me off, and because of that I moved to Adult (more specifically Adult Mobile).
I ran a couple small campaigns just to familiarize myself with Traffic Junky as well as a process for the mobile data I'm getting.
CAMPAIGN
Offer: slutroulette split test between 2 different networks
Source: Traffic Junky
Hosting: WiredTree VPS
Tracking: Prosper STM Version
INITIAL TEST DETAILS
Angle: 1 angle! At first I thought I would test a bunch of angles and then pick an offer to match, but I found that asking my AM what offers are working and build a angle from there worked much better for me. So I've done some initial testing on some possible angles and I found 1 that showed promise, so I'm going with that. I'll show it once I'm done with it lol
Ads: Created 14 different ads - 7 different headlines with 2 different pictures. This way I know which headlines are working. These are all headers (305 x 99)
Landing Page: Created 4 different landers, but I'll be testing 2 for now and slowly test the others.
I ran the landers through 2 speed tests (pingdom average: Load Time: 280ms, Page Size: 25.5kb | mobitest average: Load Time: 0.58s, Page Size: 25.54kb)
Budget: $75/day for now. Will increase eventually.
Frequency: 3/day
Bid: 0.12 CPM
Geo: Prefer not to say right now, but will dish it out once this FA is done.
GOALS
Get $100/day consecutively for 7 days
Reach $1000/day
Quit my day job
Now I'm still fairly new to AM (really new to Mobile Adult), so if you see something I'm doing wrong or some of my testing is ineffective please let me know. I'm doing this FA as a learning process and it'll hold me accountable.
Wish me luck!
Good Luck! I will be following your thread.
Stats For Yesterday:
Spend: $49.14
Revenue: $28.45
Profit: -$20.69
ROI: -42.11%
Picture Performance
Since my goal was to figure out which headlines worked best, I only used 2 pictures:
Pic1 ctr: 0.18%
Pic2 ctr: 0.24%
I took notes as to what made pic2 perform much better. I’ll be collecting more pictures based on the findings.
Headline Performance
Out of the 7 headlines, majority of the clicks came from 3 of them. So moving forward I’ll stick to those.
Landing Page Performance
LP1: 16.6% w/ 5 conversions
LP2: 27.02% w/ 4 conversions
These are both after 100+ click throughs.
Couple things I can do here I guess:
Tweak LP1 so I have a higher ctr, or tweak LP2 so it flows better with the offer.
Any Suggestions?
To Do Lists
Create more ads with more pictures.
I’m going to keep the 2 landers and make slight modifications to see if I can get a higher CTR in LP1, or higher CVR in LP2.
Add some 300x250 in the mix
@godspeed
Will do. I'll start creating some
Stats For Yesterday:
Spend: $41.57
Revenue: $12.50
Profit: -$29.07
ROI: -69.93
Picture Performance
Tested out 3 more pictures similar to the picture that was doing well in my first run:
Pic3 ctr: 0.18% w/ 2 conversions
Pic4 ctr: 0.16% w/ 2 conversions
Pic5 ctr: 0.20% w/ 0 conversion
Headline Performance
Narrowed down my headline from 7 to 4.
HL1 ctr: 0.18% w/ 2 conversions
HL3 ctr: 0.21% w/ 1 conversion
HL4 ctr: 0.16% w/ 1 conversion
HL6 ctr: 0.18% w/ 0 conversion
Landing Page Performance
I did slight changes to both landing pages. I was going to tweak LP1 to have a higher ctr, and tweak lp2 so it flows better with the offer.
LP1: 14.57% w/ 1 conversions
LP2: 17% w/ 3 conversions
These are both after 50+ click throughs.
Analysis
I think I still need more data to make any decisions.
I can cut HL6. Looking at the data, although it got 0.18% ctr, the retention after landing page was very small. So I'm guessing the HL to LP doesn't flow well.
Looking at that headline, I may just create another campaign for that and have it's own landers.
To Do Lists
Create more ads with more pictures. Include new style of pictures.
Also create 300x250 ads to throw in.
Keep testing both landers, but create a totally different one to include in the mix.
Very good call on the totally different lander. Test the HUGE changes you could make first.
TJ denied some of my ads. Going to create more and hopefully do another test tomorrow
quick update. After I get a response from TJ on why my ads weren't approved, I redid them to fit the guidelines. I've also changed my process.
I was trying to find which headline worked, but now I've switched to finding which style of ads work, and switching out the pics.
Stats for yesterday:
Spend: $40.28
Revenue: $28.00
Profit: $-12.28
Landing pages:
LP1: 28.27% CTR | 7 Conversions
LP2: 41.75% CTR | 2 Conversion
I'll be continuing with LP1 as I move ahead, while creating different style of LPs to test against it.
I really need to get higher ad CTR - it's floating between 0.17 and 0.3.
TO DO's:
- Create more batches of ads
- Test new style of lander
Question: what's the payout on your offer?
Make sure you get the highest payouts possible and also look for cheaper spots.
Keep in mind that you are competing with guys that run direct and have huge budgets.
Yeah, I think if I get a pay bump it should bring it closer to even..
Finding cheaper spots is something I'm having a hard time with, do I:
1. go to a different source and try out the campaign there
2. stay on the same source and find different countries (where the offer is allowed)
I guess I can test both.
The payout is $3
Yep both, but I would lean more towards new sources that are less competitive.
Have you tried low volume sites on EXO?
@bbrock32 no I haven't
I just stayed with TJ because I wanted to focus on one source at one time. Didn't want to over complicate things too much. But it seems like finding cheaper clicks + pay bump will get me to profitability, and then scale from there
Also agree that there are a lot of gems hidden in Exo's RON sites. There are simply too many and people don't go through the trouble of testing them all (exception: AdultAdsPro users :P
Ok,
I've found another country where it's cheaper, the problem is that the offer isn't available there. I'm going to go back to my AM and see what hot offers there are.
I'm also going to do some homework and research some of the sites thats listed on Exo.
Even though I select [Traffic Type: Mobile] and then [Ad Format: 300x250], is it safe to say that the sites that are listed in [Site Targeting], might not be mobile friendly (responsive)?
I'm also noticing a 17% click loss from TJ to my tracker.
Is there any way to reduce that?
Would switching to a different tracker help?
How fast is your tracker loading? I'd check your redirect speeds and make sure they're not slow enough that you're losing people.
Some click discrepancy is normal, but it's always worth checking stuff like this.
Nice nice,
I think you have a good traffic source that's scalable, a good setup and an achievable goal witihn 4-6 months of HARD work.
Just a little update.
- I've setup a new campaign with a different geo - same traffic source, but I'm still hunting for new ones.
- I setup imobitrax. I was fine with STM prosper but I felt doing some tasks felt cumbersome - the data is still there in both systems though.
CAMPAIGN
- this new campaign has a similar angle to the first one I started this FA with
- i had to create new banners / landers and have them translated
- 15 ads, 2 landers, 1 offer (best one from my AM)
- my bid is similar to the top 2 bids
- got it approved today, ready to start tomorrow
- my goal is to let the campaign run for the full day
- see what kind of traffic i get
- review which ad style is performing better
- hopefully determine a winning lander from the 2
ADS/LANDERS
- 4 different styles of ads
- 2 different styles of landers (rules vs questions)
- tested the landers again and both are around 200-250ms according to pingdom
TO-DOs
- start translating another lander and put it into the mix
- also start testing with exo
QUESTIONS
- right now I'm using my own tokens for TJ - do they have dynamic tokens I can use?
- I'll be starting out with RON to determine if there are any hidden gems (thanks @ffclogin). Now my questions is, is it better to run CPC or CPM when your going RON? My thought is that if I go CPM, RON with just eat up my money, where as if I go CPC, I'll be paying for the results (I've read that somewhere here).
Looks good! Keep launching new angles / campaigns!
Lander loading speeds look good too.
If you have no experience with ExoClick RON, and you don't have a big budget, I would stick to CPC.
Once you get a hang of it more, I think you'll know what to do. I've noticed that our biggest users always do CPM for RON despite what people complain about regarding quality.
Yesterday's Stats
Spend: $3.91
Revenue: $5
Profit: $1.09
Small profit but the volume isn't there - I'm first bid getting more than half the traffic. At this rate, to get enough statistical significance would take me a couple weeks.
I created a campaign on exoclick - RON, cpc - but still not seeing a lot of volume
TO-DOS
- include new placements
- find new sources
Does anyone use iMobitrax? One thing good about STM prosper was that you can view your landing page stats across all your campaigns... in iMobitrax it only displays that LP stats of that certain campaign. Does anyone know how to do that?
If you're not getting any traffic for RON CPC, it probably means your bid is too low for the targeting. Try upping the bid a bit every so often until you can see some traffic. Then you know what the baseline is. Remember, if successful, eventually you'll want to switch to CPM anyway. CPC is just a way to avoid a massive amount of impressions in the beginning so you don't waste too much money. Like I said, once you get the hang of Exo's RON, the bigger guys seem to always do CPM anyway.
UPDATE
February 19
Spend: $15.32
Revenue: $12.50
Profit: -$2.82
February 22
Spend: $57.00
Revenue: $37.50
Profit: -$19.50
February 24
Spend: $46.88
Revenue: $10.00
Profit: -$36.88
- Just yesterday I had enough data to find out which ad style was performing well. So I started creating more ad variation with that particular ad style.
- LP CTR and CVR is similar despite different styles.
- LP CTR: 30-35%
- CVR: 5%
* can someone show me a link on how to calculate the math to become profitable? I've seen it here before but I can't find it. I know I have to increase my ad ctr, lp ctr, and cvr, but I'd like to know exactly at what %
NOTES:
- It seems like with the smaller GEOs, to get enough statistical data I have to go through a couple different sources.
- I also upped my bid in ExoClick and I saw less traffic. I'll keep upping it until I see something
