Did social media kill email?

The answer, as with all clickbait headlines, is no.

If social media matters to you at all your should check out this very good article on Moz http://moz.com/blog/facebook-algorithm-change

In the graph below, the first bar represents September 2012 (for a reference point), while the rest of the bars represent months within 2013. Over a year ago, organic reach fared much better than it does today. In the past few months, we've seen a decrease from 12.6% to 7.7%.

All audiences/channels are not created equal. With social media, your reach is subject to the whims and objectives of the platform. An email lead may generally cost more, but when you email 100,000 people, you'll generally reach all of them. Your email will be viewed in full screen and they won't have 100 other little links and images competing for their attention and clicks.

This is why, according to a recent survey by McKinsey & Company, email "remains a significantly more effective way to acquire customers than social media—nearly 40 times that of Facebook and Twitter combined."

Food for thought! Happy brainstorming.
