A humble $100 p/d goal on Mobile (16)

A humble $100 p/d goal on Mobile

After lurking on STM for a while I’ve finally got a mobile campaign together. I would like to keep a log here to get some feedback from the community and to get more involved with this endeavor

Offer: Android app install
Source: Incrowd
Geo: Asia
Pay-out: $0.19
Tracking: -
Host: Interserver 1G VPS

Initially I started my campaign with the STM stracker. The postback to Incrowd didn’t work while I think this is quite crucial. I decided to cut out the tracker all together so I’m direct linking at the moment. Another problem is that my VPS has a 520ms response time in Singapore vs 94 in the US.

I’ve tried an US Android app install which did -92% ROI after initial testing so I’m going to ditch that one and continue with the Asian offer.

Day 1:
Spent: $ 10,66
Revenue: $ 2,85
Profit: $ -7,81
ROI: -73%
Clicks: 901

I started testing this offer with 320x50 banners. I had 2 different copies and 2 different banners styles which combined to 4 banners:
Banner 1 Copy 1: ROI -77%, conversions 2
Banner 1 Copy 2: ROI -58%, conversions 9
Banner 2 Copy 1: ROI -92%, conversions 1
Banner 2 Copy 2: ROI -77%, conversions 3

Note that B1C2 got more conversion because Incrowd starts placing more bids for converting campaigns when using smart CPM. This is kind of annoying when split testing in my opinion.

Day 2:
Spent: $ 3,65
Revenue: $ 1,71
Profit: $ -1,94
ROI: -53%
Clicks: 481

I decided to test how far the best converting campaign would get me combined with App traffic only since this also converted better. I realize this is not the way forward since I should stick to testing creative before cutting targeting.

What I have learned from testing on Day 1 is that it is probably best to test multiple copies with the same design. B1C2 was the best performing but I still don’t know if it is the copy or the design which makes it work.

My next plan is to test more creatives, 6 different copies with the same design. On top of that I started working on an LP so I can test how this performs vs DL.

Any feedback is welcome but please go easy on me, I’m new at this

Thanks

Nice man, I would be stoked to be at -53% roi on day 2. Good luck with this follow along bro. I'm going to be following this very closely because this is very similar to the follow along I am going to start early next week. I am doing INTL app installs on inCrowd also but I am doing arabic instead of asian countries.

I've been reading a bit about mobile and I don't think this is a good idea... Let's wait and see what the admins say... I would try imobitrax probably and the guys from cpv lab told me this weekend they are releasing an updated version which can track mobile too.

How are you bidding mate? You need to up your bids. Are you splitting your campaigns based on country too?

@Mr Green how are you tracking your mobile campaigns? With what tool?

I have no problem with direct linking to Incrowd since their platform is very good and i can track everything i want. However im looking for a new tracker since i want to start using LPs

You mean that i need to get more traffic? Im bidding by smart CPM, i have increased the daily budget to attrackt more traffic. I did not split test different countries yet but i do have more banners ready for a second market

You can use incrowd tracking like you said, or there is the STM tracker (free) that you can use that will do that job too.

In terms of getting more traffic, up your bids not your daily budget. Duplicate you campaign a few times with different bids, increase them by 10 cents each.

Yes, yes I know, but my question was which one you are using

STM tracker for landers, incrowd for direct linking.

Green man : why need to duplicate you campaign a few times with different bids

I've still have multiple issues with the STM tracker. The postback to Incrowd doesn't work and the last time it also generated URLs which resulted in an error page. I might give it another shot this weekend.

According to my Incrowd rep the smart CPM system should be reaching the daily budget. I've entered a budget of $20 for today, it still has 70% of that spend so I don't think it going to reach it but we shall see. Tomorrow I can try manual bidding with different bids per campaign or perhaps double the budget with smart CPM to see how far it goes.

Day 3:
Crtv Imp Click Cnv Spend Rev Profit ROI
C2 18097 151 3 $1,25 $0,57 $-0,68 -54%
C3 18243 126 2 $1,30 $0,38 $-0,92 -71%
C4 18348 138 2 $1,28 $0,38 $-0,90 -70%
C5 18284 146 1 $1,28 $0,19 $-1,09 -85%
C6 18305 138 4 $1,29 $0,76 $-0,53 -41%
C7 18120 150 1 $1,26 $0,19 $-1,07 -85%

Total 109397 849 13 $7,66 $2,47 $-5,19 -68%

Not nearly enough spend like expected, the split test is not significant enough in my opinion. I'm going to let this run for now and tonight I can test a few versions with different manual bids.

I'm going to test a different country and continue working on my LP

Day 4:
Spent: $7,90
Revenue: $3,78
Profit: $-4,12
ROI: -52%
Clicks: 1437
Conv: 21

For Day 3 and 4 my banner test looks as follows:

Crtv Imp Clicks Cnv Spend Rev Profit ROI
C5 44257 398 5 $2,61 $0,90 $-1,71 -66%
C2 44094 431 5 $2,58 $0,90 $-1,68 -65%
C6 44032 342 9 $2,59 $1,62 $-0,97 -37%
C3 44153 339 4 $2,63 $0,72 $-1,91 -73%
C7 44027 389 6 $2,58 $1,08 $-1,50 -58%
C4 44112 387 3 $2,58 $0,54 $-2,04 -79%

Tot 264675 2286 32 $15,57 $5,76 $-9,81 -63%

I will continue with copy #6 and make a few different banner designs to see if the ROI can go up. This weekend I will also test a different market, get a tracker setup and finish my LP so that I can do a lot of testing starting on Monday.

FML I discovered that Incrowd does ad approval in the weekend, this is going to destroy my weekends

Ok so I tested 2 more things:
1) A new country which was closed in volume and CPM price

Imp Clicks Conv eCPA
40k 315 7 $0,73

The closest I got with my original country was $0,26 (breakeven target is $0,18) and the volume is bigger so I will continue with my original market.

2) LP vs direct link:
DL:
Imp Clicks Conv eCPA
107k 623 14 $0,45

LP:
Imp Clicks Conv eCPA
110K 614 14 $0,46

So no difference there. The banners were exactly the same, only with LP I just put a lander in between. The designs of the banner LP and offer are totally not matching so I can definitely improve there. Also the Imp 2 Click rate is only 0,55% 0,58% which can definitely improve.

Next plan is to test 6 different banner designs with the same copy. I will trow my LP in there as well with a matching banner.

Nice! You're getting loads of good data here - systematic testing for the win!
