DOI vs. SOI

How do you handle when the leads were really made? I run a good amount of doi offers and I've noticed that my leads will come in days later. It can happen for various reasons, I assume the big one is the confirmation link is in the dude's email and he doesn't confirm the link for a few days. The issue is that sometimes I'll think a banner is not profitable so I'll cut it, only to have the banner register a fair amount of leads several days later. So how do you account for this?

You do staggered testing with tracking, and you account for this by matching tracked revenues precisely to the associated cost.

what do you mean by staggered testing with tracking?

Figure out what the conversion time is for the activity within 3 standard deviations (1 week, 2 weeks, whatever)

Assuming this is three weeks:

Week one, run campaigns 1-5 in parallel so that you can track performance on them

Week two, run campaigns 6-10 in parallel so that you can track performance on them

Week three, run campaigns 11-15 in parallel so that you can track performance on them

Week four review performance of campaigns 1-5, cull losing campaigns, keep winning campaigns

Week five review performance of campaigns 6-10 and against week four performance of campaigns 1-5, take appropriate action based on the data

Week six review performance of campaigns 11-15 and against week four performance of campaigns 1-5 and week five performance of campaigns 6-10, take appropriate action based on the data

etc. etc. etc.

In my case:

I have a postback to a server when a conversion takes place. My tracker checks when the actual visit was and attaches the conversion to that date in the specific ad network's timezone when my LP server is located in GMT+2 or something.

For example:
I started a campaign yesterday and I've spent $50 on ad network which delivered the ads in timezone GMT-5 and today I've spent $100.
Cake platform for example shows me "100" conversions for "today" in GMT-5 and "20" for yesterday.
My tracker puts the conversions where they belong and might show me that there were actually 50 conversions yesterday (gmt-5) and 70 today (gmt-5)... for any specific traffic source, LP, creative, placement, etc.

Timezones and DOI almost cooked my brain once!

Also, you might want to urge the visitor to check mail ASAP to make your life a bit easier + increase ROI.

Is there a way to "postback to the server when a conversion takes place" in CPV Lab?

I don't know CPV lab but I guess it would have. it should.

I have home grown stuff.

If you don't have a tracking solution that can match the campaign to the conversion (even if this happens much later), you will have a nightmare both optimising your campaigns and properly accounting for your P&L.

I use CPV Lab, I guess I just need to either wait a lil for accurate stats or assume a small margin of error on my stats.

Yep, if you have your postbacks set up properly on the offer you're promoting (and assuming the people running the offer also have everything set up correctly on their end), CPVLab will track the conversion even if it happens a few days later.

Yeah. So the problem is not that the conversion is tracked and registers. It's a problem of potentially cutting the wrong ads, because conversions are coming in days later.

Should I simply wait a little longer for DOI to make cuts?

No, you run staggered campaigns based on how long conversions take.

How many days later are you seeing conversions coming in?

01-09-2014 08:11 PM #14 bravenewworld (Member)

3-4 days later for DOI

Hmm, yeah, you're probably best, if not running a full staggered setup, at least running the campaign until you have enough data to cut on ROI ( use the stats calculator to be sure ), then pausing the camp for a few days and waiting for the conversions to come in.
