I consider this a pretty newbie question. I've decided on mobile as a traffic source and have came to the conclusion that a dedicated server is definitely the way to go. I'm just wondering if you guys know of any cheaper dedicated servers lower then $100 bucks. I'm not on an extensive budget and want as much of my money to go towards data as I can.
I'm signed up with digitalocean but don't know if this would be fast enough for mobile. Also what about gogax? It's only $39 a month for a dedicated server. Want to get the best bang for my buck here!
Happy new years people, cheers
Dave
PS
First year I've stayed inside on new years with the fam (I'm a student) just too addicted to this affiliate marketing thing :P
First, do you need a "managed" server, or can you be your own sysadmin?
If you need managed, that really limits your choices. Someone else will hopefully chime in w some recommendations in your price range.
If unmanaged is ok, you've got lots of options. I would even recommend you go with a reputable cloud/vps provider instead of a dedicated box. It will offer you more flexibility for where (geographically) you launch your server, and you can put them up, take them down, scale them up, and reimage them all within minutes.
DigitalOcean, AWS EC2, and rackspace are all solid hosts well inside your budget.
No reason IMO to lock in a dedicated server at this point. You can always move to dedicated later, once you have a better idea of what you need out of a server.
Do you know what countries you're going to be running ads in yet? If so, try to launch your server nearest to your visitors. It matters more w mobile than desktop, as the RTT times through mobile networks are 3-10x slower than wired/wifi connections.
Nope, not sure which countries yet. I don't know how to manage, I've been trying to learn on digital ocean but haven't really been getting to far..
Only reason I was thinking of going straight into dedicated was because I've heard many people say to immediately start with dedicated for mobile, I don't want to lose any clicks even when I'm just starting.
Would lets say a 4GB plan on digital ocean for $40 a month preform well enough to run mobile traffic at a decent enough speed that I wouldn't lose any clicks? I could even do 8GB at $80 a month.
Kyler is right. If you are starting out a VPS or cloud is all you need.
After you start sending big traffic you can upgrade easily.
