Why do you need rackspace for tj?

I've read a lot of people recommending rackspace for adult traffic, why is this? My best guess is that networks like tj don't host the banners like pof and you need to self host them, is this correct?

I think the most recommended use for rackspace is CDN, your landing pages will be loaded faster from a CDN if you're doing international campaigns and your hosting is in US instead

Yeah it has nothing to do with your banners, because you upload them to their servers. Rackspace is generally used for CDN hosting like Dario said - to make your landers load faster.

So what is the difference between a cdn and a vps? Any need for a vps if I'm hosting web pages on a cdn and tracking with Voluum?

You can't usually host a whole website on a CDN host. CDN is just for static files/pages. So mainly images, videos, etc. Generally a website includes JS and php and other dynamic properties.

So most ppl use both... a VPS to house the actual website php/html/etc. And a CDN host for .jpg's, .png's, .css's, videos, etc.

Indeed so.

If you're just using Javascript and HTML, and Voluum doesn't need any PHP on your page, then you could perfectly well host your LPs on a CDN. But as soon as you start adding anything like PHP, you'll need those pages to be on a server, because your CDN can't execute that PHP.

A CDN can help if you are doing big volume but not always ( depending on country / server you have etc ).

Have a look at the split test I did couple days ago between CDNs and running directly from your server :
