Tracking Questions: Moving From POF to Voluum

POFpro has been my only experience with tracking. I am trying to set up Voluum to get started on FB, running into a few issues I need clarifying.

1. In the Traffic Source tab, when we add a new traffic source we are given a ton of fields.

PostBack URL? Voluum says use this option if I need to fire conversions back to my traffic source. This is new, my experience with postbacks has been to use them to fire back conversions to my tracker. Why would we want to fire postbacks to the traffic source? To Facebook? Which traffic source supports this?

External ID? To track external unique IDs. This is typically used when you need to return an ID to teh traffic source. Again why would we did this?

Cost? Tells me to add this parameter if my traffic source can pass click/visitor costs. This enables me to auto track costs using Auto settings in the camp setup. Okay, I get this. So if FB has a parameter that record the CPC that they are charging me I can give this information to my tracker. Would this be appended to my offer link? Does FB even have a parameter for this?

Custom Variable? Okay, I get this. If FB has variables like {state} or {age} or {creativeID} I can pass these to my tracker where I can account for them. Similair question to the cost field though - what's the link that I will append these parameters to?

2. In the settings and Domains tab it says, "Here you can add your custom tracking domains. We highly recommend adding a custom domain. The default trackvoluum.com is meant for testing purposes only."

I am confused. This tracker isn't self-hosted, and so I wouldn't need a tracking domain I thought. What is the "custom tracking domain" that we can add. What is it for?

3. In the settings Setup tab, the postback URL is:

http://knkru.trackvoluum.com/postback?cid={ID}

I am assuming we erase the "{ID}" and use whatever syntax our network requires

4. When creating a new campaign there is a postback URL field. I have no idea what should go here.

Alright fellas. Thanks for taking the time. Gonna go back to Voluum and digest some more

Hey summa,

I'm not sure if you wrote to our support in regards to these questions so I'll answer them here (in the future do write us thru our ticket system - you'll get a quick reply that way).

Also, since your post we've revised the help texts within the system + we added tooltips across the platform.

1) When adding FB as a traffic source, you won't need to add a postback URL. Postback URLs on the traffic source level are used when you buy media on a CPA cost-model. The same goes for External IDs.

In regards to the parameters that FB supports, you'll have to check the FB documentation as I'm not familiar with it.

2) By default new Voluum accounts use trackvoluum.com - we recommend using your own domain in case our default domain gets flagged.

3) Correct, you will add the appropriate subid token from you network.

4) As mentioned in point 1) the postback URL on the traffic source/campaign level is used for CPA based buys. In the campaign view it'll be automatically populated if you select a traffic source with a postback URL.

Let me know if that helps!

Robert
