Redbox on Kiip mobile traffic (and $100 credit to help you get started)
What’s up STMers!
I posted here a couple weeks ago inviting some forum users to test out Kiip’s traffic. The response has been great. I’ve gotten a couple questions pretty consistently about what works so I thought I would throw up a case study campaign. I also have a few $100 promo codes so if you’re ready to test I can give you a bit of a headstart. Anyway, let’s start with the case study.
Offer: Redbox Instant
Payout: $10.00
Landing Page: http://landing.redboxinstant.com/fre...fcode=rbi:aff:
The ad unit I used for this offer is our reward ad unit. Here’s how it works:
- User is in an app and achieves something (runs 4km in their fitness app, crosses all the to-do items off the list in their task manager app, beats the end boss in a game, etc)
- User is presented with a reward for their achievement (reward = offer)
- If the user is interested in claiming the reward, they tap “claim” and the offer is sent to their email
- User opens their email and clicks through to the advertiser LP
Here’s an example of the flow. Just click the image to get the reward to pop. It would normally pop for the user after they have, for example, crossed all the items of their to-do list.
http://app.kiip.me/reward/demo/52657...0b99&flow=dtf#
To set up the offer we need to define targeting, set cap and distribution type, upload the reward creative, email creative, and plug in the tracking link.
Targeting: US only, RON
Cap: 5k rewards, distributed evenly per day over 5 days
Reward Creative:
Attachment 1560
Email Creative:
Attachment 1561
Days 1-5:
Impressions: 81k
Rewards claimed: 5k
Reward redemption rate: 6.17%
CPC: $0.15
Spend: $750
Revenue: $400
At this point the offer paused because of the 5k redemption cap. I let it stay paused for a couple days while the email conversions continued to roll in. There were a number of placements that were driving redemptions but lacked the email opens and clicks so I paused those, set a new cap, and fired it back up -
Post-optimization (5 days):
Impressions: 77k
Rewards claimed: 3.1k
Reward redemption rate: 4.02%
CPC: $0.15
Spend: $468
Revenue: $1170
At this point I paused the campaign and handed it off to an affiliate who got started with us early (on the condition that he was cool with me using it for a case study). Kiip doesn’t really have an interest in running CPA – it’s less risk and more scalable for us to invite ladies and gentlemen such as yourselves to jump on board our platform. That said, it’s great insight for me to run campaigns like this - I can be of much better assistance with your own campaigns. If and when I have time I'll be continuing to test a campaign or two and hand off the profitable ones to affiliates.
Here are a few tips for running campaigns on Kiip:
- The psychology of our users means that they are driven to convert. Redemption and conversion rates of 40%+ are common for many of our placements. Imagine you ran 5 miles before breakfast and were given a reward. You earned that shit, right? We get complaints from users who, for whatever reason, have trouble converting. They earned it and they want their reward.
- Traffic is usually split about 50/50 desktop and mobile after users open their email. If you can monetize both types of traffic you’ll do much better.
- Keep the reward orientation in mind for your creative angles. Free trials, coupons, free samples, discounts, etc. perform best.
- Our traffic is NOT incentivized in the traditional sense. Incent traffic drives user engagement away from the offer. Our traffic drives engagement into the offer. This is a subtle but important difference. If advertisers are concerned about this I recommend starting small and letting them see how the traffic backs out. It will speak for itself.
- We're social. Our ads are branded, we’re on twitter, etc. I’m no stranger to the affiliate game and have direct experience with the health, diet, subscription, carrier billing, co-reg etc. Some of these campaigns will be a fit, some of them won’t be. Get in touch and we can discuss on a case-by-case basis.
One last thing that I'm super excited about - in the next day or two we’re going live with an ad unit that direct links to the offer rather than using a follow up email. This will allow for much stronger conversions on CPI offers. Think about CPIs that can can be promoted incorporating a reward in the app, eg. maybe there are ecommerce apps out there that allow promo codes to for credit on a user's first booking... I have campaign ideas, promo codes, and creatives ready to go. Hit me up, lez gow!

Interesting stuff!
Is there any way to exclude desktop or mobile traffic, or do all campaigns have to run with both?

We're in the process of going live with a new ad unit that will direct link to the App Store/Google Play when a user claims a reward. So yes, shortly! Either later today or first thing next week.

Nice, i really like the potential angles i see..
Just want to wrap my head around Kiip.
Usually the users are rewarded with in app items. Whats usually given away by non advertisers?
Is the advertising looked at as giveaway as well, or is that the angle you suggest taking?

Sup dude!
For context, the last little while we've been working with brands and agencies only. I think it's a similar arc to a few other traffic sources out there - they start with agencies and direct deals only, and as they grow they build out a self-serve platform to allow new advertisers to come on board and help scale the business. We've only had our self-serve platform opened up for just a few days now. I can tell you what's worked based on the brand campaigns we've done, but I know you and the other STMers are some creative marketers. That's why I'm here! I'm sure I'll see some campaigns come through that I never would have thought of.
The two biggest constraints on what will work are the reward angle and the user experience. Beyond that you can run pretty much anything. Here's what I mean:
Reward Angle - Offers are presented as a reward to the user so it's all about taking an offer and figuring out how to present it as a reward. Our rewards have historically been free samples, free trials and discounts for the most part.
Here's a link to our creative best practices for a little bit of context. Figuring out a reward angle on offers that don't fit that mold can be a little harder to do but if anyone can do it...
User Experience - This one's a little bit tricky. We're social, our ads are branded, and we invite users to give us feedback. Because of this it limits the campaigns that we can run. Our advertising guidelines are
here. If you've got some ideas hit me up an we'll figure it out!

This looks great. Is the KIIP affiliate program still going on and anyone working on it?
