Industry virus, read asap!

A file going around on skype being sent as 'invoice_335407.pdf.exe' (kinda obvious its a virus or high risk with the .exe lol, but somehow some people aren't realizing) is a virus. Don't open it!

I've had it sent to me by quite a few people already. Not sure what it does yet, but it definitely sends itself to your whole skype list.

Another reason I heart mac computers.

It may be the encrypt Hard Drive one.

Use this free and easy way to change your GroupPolicies to prevent an app from encrypting your Hard Drive.

I've just bought a new Windows laptop and I feel like a techtard with how foreign it seems. Accessing the web is like walking down a dark alley... (especially where I frequent)

Definitely an unwise investment. Mac indeed ftw.

I like macbooks but I hate that you cant replace the battery/hard drive/Ram yourself without voiding warranty and cracking your case open. They even soldered the damn ram to the motherboard these days. Screw that, I don't want to pay 1000% markup on apple hardware and have to take my laptop to some bs apple genius store if the battery goes bad.

The CryptoPrevent utility that kevins recommends is the same one that's been recommended by bleepingcomputer (excellent anti-malware site), btw - just in case anyone was concerned about installing a random program to combat malware

Yeah, nothing protects valuable data and user environment like a well configured mac.

A mirrored drive once in a while and a constant time machine backup to a 2tb time capsule goes a long way to save your ass in case of emergency. It's like $70 bucks or so to add 2tb to the AirPort Extreme. Think about the hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars spent to get the insight, to gather the data; what is $70 and 2 clicks to protect that?

I will say, I need easy access to Windows desktop. There are a ton of niche tools built for PC only that float around our industry. I don't know what I would do without parallels running windows and/ or dual boot to windows for the rare niche tools that need to be run on a local machine. I always keep restore points and snapshots so trouble can usually be resolved within minutes of a problem arising.

I've got it quite a few times too .. didn't accept it obviously, and I have a mac!

I just started last year using time machine and it's so nice. I'm thinking about backing everything up to Dropbox soon as well.

That's definitely a very good idea, ideally with the "Packrat" addon which stores version changes forever.

As a specific note: the Cryptolocker virus is designed to also encrypt any onsite backups that you have continuously connected to your computer - like Time Machine. So on-site backups aren't a defence against it unless you religiously unplug the drive after backing up.

Whilst there isn't a Mac variant yet, I wouldn't recommend betting all your data on that continuing to be the case. Cloud-based backup services are cheap for the additional security they provide!

^^ this, and Definitely use some kind of a cloud based service like dropbox.com or copy.com or even google drive is a great option
