This is bad ass!

Google deliver once again. +1

whoa. That's pretty cool!

09-30-2013 07:28 PM #6 bbrock32 (Administrator)

Niceee , this should be a perfect solution for non technical affiliates starting out.

09-30-2013 08:13 PM #7 arjun (Member)

^^ Exactly. I've already passed it on to a few newb publishers and they're loving it.

Yeah it's not quite what its name implies. Looks like its mainly for making HTML5 ads. I'm all for flash ads dying out though.

“To help advertisers and publishers more seamlessly unlock the potential of cross-device programs, we are investing in a new HTML5 creative development tool – Google Web Designer. Available in the coming months, Google Web Designer will empower creative professionals to create cutting-edge advertising as well as engaging web content like sites and applications – for free. Google Web Designer will be seamlessly integrated with DoubleClick Studio and AdMob, greatly simplifying the process of building HTML5 creative that can be served through Google platforms.”

Looks good.

How badly must you shit yourself when Google moves in to your market and starts offering a free service?!

I would imagine it's "bring a change of underwear to work" day in a few divisions at Adobe right now...

So far it seems like a really nice tool to me, however why is there no love for those of us that likes to rip and optimise other people's landers?

10-06-2013 04:03 AM #12 panthary (Member)

Just remember the fine print in the TOS, Google owns anything you create with it

10-07-2013 05:56 PM #13 caurmen (Administrator)

@panthary - Hmm, that's actually a good point. I can't believe they'll have screwed up the intellectual property issues on the Web Designer, but I should go check the terms of service on it to be sure...

anyone played around with this yet? I was meaning to check it out but muse meets my noobeeds (noob needs ha) ... interested to hear if this is any better, different etc. Will report back once I've tried it !

12-13-2013 10:43 AM #15 caurmen (Administrator)

It's on my to-do list, and has been sitting there for ages

Must give it a go.

12-13-2013 11:38 AM #16 graham (Member)

Seems like a great tool, but do they really own everything I create?

Google can keep all the porno banners I'm about to create with this tool, it'll be fun to see how they'll use it. Unless... they go on to launch a Google Porno platform.

Have you tried this out yet? Any reviews?

07-28-2014 10:54 AM #19 caurmen (Administrator)

I have indeed - thanks for the reminder! I haven't really tested it out thoroughly, but I've done enough to be quite impressed.

Design-wise, it's a pretty solid competitor for Muse, and of course it's free. It's certainly significantly better than competitors like Macaw - the interface is reasonably intuitive (although it has a few oddities like its insistence on everything being called a "tag" - makes sense in the HTML but not in a visual metaphor.

The big weak point that it shares with basically everything right now is that it doesn't do responsive design. That's the reason I haven't used it more.

However, it has very powerful, easy-to-use animation features. I've only really scraped the surface of what you can do with them, but they look to be close to the level of some of the things I've seen Zeno do with Edge Animate, and they're as simple to use as Photoshop's animation tools, whilst being as powerful as After Effects or a similar tool. Speaking as a professional animator, I'm very impressed with them - they've got very sophisticated easing features, a nice timeline, strong 3D options, and are generally extremely usable.

The EULA, btw, is not as scary as it looks. You do license Google to use your content, but only for purposes related to Web Designer - they can't just run away with your creatives. It's a little alarming, but probably not a deal-breaker.

I'm going to put together an introductory tutorial with it in the next couple of weeks, now that you've reminded me about it.

Quick update on this: there's good news and bad news.

Bad news: It's a bit less usable than it initially looked. I've been working on a video tutorial demonstrating creation of a Rules Lander today, but I've hit enough roadblocks with things like making sure divs are appropriately nested that I need to test more. GWD is still very much in alpha, and some things - like centering divs, doing relative positions, or making sure that Div A is in Div B, are much less intuitive than Muse.

Good news: Did I just say Rules Lander? Hell yes I did! GWD doesn't just do HTML5 animation - you can actually author interactivity within it! That means that you can do things like a rules lander or a quiz lander without having to touch code. You can make elements glow or become transparent when you mouse over them, you can even get things to animate in 3D in response to user input.

It's very exciting, and I'll have a tutorial soon, once I've figured out the finer points.

Will definitely be testing this out on some mobile pages.

08-08-2014 08:17 AM #22 caurmen (Administrator)

Oh, one other thing that may be of interest for people:

GWD can open web pages that were not authored in it.

So if you need to do a quick edit, unlike Muse, it's possible to edit HTML graphically in GWD.

@caurmen: Thanks for the feedback on GWD. I was just about to embark on learning Muse to build my first lander. I am not really worried about Google's eula, and I like the idea of authoring arbitrary web pages. Would you recommend going with GWD over Muse? I can find my way around html and css, a little, but want the speed of a wysiwyg tool like Muse.

08-11-2014 10:11 PM #24 caurmen (Administrator)

Try GWD first as it's free - you can always buy Muse later if you don't like it. Or indeed, get the 30-day trial of Muse too and split-test 'em

08-12-2014 04:26 AM #25 gcellis (Member)

@caurmen: Thanks. I took a long look at GWD and liked it but I'll go with muse for now. I think that will be a smaller learning curve for me. Later on when I'm more settled into AM I'll definitely start using GWD (I'm sure before I have to make another annual payment for muse .

Just registered for a GWD webinar this week, where they walk you through the features: https://www.google.com/training/enroll/activity/639

@adsurfer: I just registered. Thanks.

@adsurfer - nice share! Likely to be very useful.

Hey man, did you ever put out a tutorial for this one.. Im looking to do better rules or quiz landers,

thanks!

I was wondering, how do you post your banner on a traffic source like Decisive. Mainly because it is a html and not a image.

Do I need a website to run it?

A tutorial on this would be bomb!

10-09-2015 03:20 AM #32 imphocused (Member)

The banner is an image file. The landing page is your html. Whether you need a server or not depends on if you need server-side scripting (e.g. PHP). If not, you can use a CDN. You can get started with some tutorials linked in I Want A Step-By-Step Guide To Getting Started! Where Can I Find One?

10-09-2015 02:33 PM #33 jean03 (Member)

The banner created by Google Web Designer is a html file. I may of have made a mistake when trying to publish it or save it... Could you help me if that is the case?
