Virtual Private Networks

Does anyone here use VPNs? If you do which do you use?

I was recommended http://hidemyass.com/vpn/ and so far happy with the service. $59.99 for 1 year. There are cheaper VPNs, however HMA have VPN servers in 61 countries. But that doesn't matter I suppose unless you need that many.

Overplay!

It has tons of countries , it's pretty cheap and most important it's reliable.

Rarely you see any countries not working.

Overplay's actual application, IMO, is a lot simpler and faster to use/connect to VPNs compared to HMA. However, HMA has some countries that Overplay does not have - e.g. Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, amongst others.

I'm using PureVPN sending 90% of my traffic through the UK despite living in Thailand. I've got a fibre optic line here and to be honest rarely notice the difference. Once in a blue moon it drops out but it's never really a problem. I do recommend ditching any bloated software that comes with the VPN service you end up with in favour of routing it direct through your operating system. OS X works beautifully with VPNs.

Gotta admit I have noticed my MacBook significantly heating up since using a VPN. I'm not sure whether this is an increased CPU load or the fact that at the same time I installed Mountain Lion which to be frank has caused nothing but problems since. :|

FYI if you're almost permanently using a VPN it may be useful to have a router that supports passing traffic through a VPN. E.g. any Tomato/DD-WRT compatible router. Never done it, probably has benefits though would make switching countries more tedious.
