Hi Guys,
I set up my first campaign on Exoclick yesterday and the CTR has been all over the place ranging from (god awful) 0.01% to (still shabby) 0.31%. Average CTR is 0.06% which is shite. I'm bidding on CPC though, otherwise I would be screwed.
I've targeted on every relevant site. Bidding on either NTV A, or B or C placements and also the homepage cube.
I know that CTR is going to vary because of the various placements. My question is apart from testing new banners to get CTR up, should I also cut some of the placements? Or just leave as is, since it's cpc anyway?
One more thing, today I noticed CTR drop to 0.03%. Why would CTR drop by that much in one day?
Cheers!
What i would do is create a separate campeign for each placement, and track performance of each placement based on your ROI, not the CTR.
Exoclick is complicated though, one day you get lots of traffic, another none at all although you havnt changed anything.
Thanks rafael3000,
That sounds a bit hectic since I'm bidding on a lot of placements - would be 58 campaigns and a lot of placements aren't getting many impressions. I'm using CPV lab though which allows me to track each placement/ROI, so I'm not sure it's neccessary to do that or am I missing something?
Also, does poor CTR affect how many impressions you get?
Have you tried bidding CPM? I'm sure I'd read somewhere that CPC bidding on Exo just gives you the remnant traffic.
I bid CPM, and it means you don't have to pay much attention to CTR, just look at the profitability of each ad. It doesn't really matter if you only get a 0.06% CTR if that ad is still profitable.
Hey Nick, thanks for chiming in. I did consider CPM, but would that not screw me since my CTR is low? I mean, I'm talking 0.06% not 0.60% (which would be awesome).
Yes, but what I mean is that by testing CPM, you might get a higher CTR.
Maybe worth a small $20 test.
Oh really? So are you saying CPC traffic is poorer quality? If that's the case, then yeah it might be worth a shot.
Well , I wouldn't consider CPC traffic remnant unless you bid the bare minimum.
Ads are displayed ordered by eCPM , which is roughly calculated as CTR*CPC if you bid CPC or just equals CPM if you bid CPM.
This means it's not the bidding type that gives your remnant traffic but the low eCPM.
There is actually a column on EXO that shows eCPM if you bid CPC.
As in your case I would continue CPC and optimize to be profitable.
After that I would move to CPM with your best ads and try to lower CPCs.
Hey bbrock32,
I'm bidding 20% more than the minimum, so I will just carry on with CPC then.
What I don't understand is why CTR would drop in just one day when nothing has changed.
The problem with CPC campaigns on Exo is that they "optimize" your ads based on the initial CTR, meaning that ads starting out with a high CTR will subsequently receive more and possibly also "better" impressions.
This can be pretty random and stop an ad from gaining any traction if it happened to start out with a low CTR.
Because of this I stopped CPC campaigns altogether and run exclusively CPM, which divides impressions evenly among ads, no matter how high/low the CTR.
Yeah, I noticed that. I will try both cpm and cpc.
Why is there both a CPM and Smart CPM option? Seems to make sense to go with Smart CPM if they automatically adjust bids.
With CPM you pay the CPM you bid no matter what competition bids.
With SmartCPM you bid only 5% more than the 2nd place if the bid is lower than the SmartCPM you set.
