QS Change, why? (8)

QS Change, why?

Hey guys,

Been running a campaign all week where the QS built up to 9/10 and 7/10 for some keywords but dramatically dropped over the weekend to 4/10......

Why would this be?

There has been no change to ads, bids or landing page and there is no extra competition.
CTR has been pretty consistant maybe a 1% drop if anything avg over the week.

I'll hit the reps up but wanted to know if anyone knows why here.

Cheers

I'm seeing the same thing as well. Launched a campaign 2 weeks ago and it started off with a good QS (8-9/10) and dropped this weekend to 4-5/10. I've contacted the reps but they couldn't tell me why the sudden drop. I suspect when you first launch the campaign the QS is system assigned based on the keyword density etc but when it drops it could be because it was manually review by a MSN rep. Let us know if you find out anything from the reps

I've recently seemed the same thing as well. CTR was good, only explanation I can think of is that My bids were TOO LOW which caused them to DROP the QS which caused me to Increase my CPC which caused my account to go under review.
On another topic, I bidded very high on keywords that started at 3 and over time after about $600 went up to 5/6.

Qs is based on 3 metrics, ad relevancy, landing page and expected ctr. Sounds like the last one is hurting you as your expected ctr on those kws must be lower than average.

Test more ads, pause the lower performing ones and iterate, iterate, iterate until you ctr improves.

PS what's ur avg ctr?

1,500 impressions is when the true QS kicks in from what I've read. Have you tried DKI, Exact and Phrase match types & negatives to improve CTRs?

In starting new campaigns you often automatically get assigned a 'standard' QS of 7 or 10. Only after a couple of days running you'll see the true quality score appear which is based on the factors named above. Adwords does use a bot to check your landingpage for relevance (mostly keyword density probably), called Adsbot if you want to know more.

In the short term, I do believe that QS is mostly based on if the Adbot finds some on-page relevance so Adwords will take you for a trial-run. Only after a couple of days or weeks, depending on your traffic, will Adwords be able to calculate your actual QS. This is mostly based on your CTR - your CTR in comparison to your competitors. You can have a great CTR but still have a low QS if your competitor has higher CTR.

Disclaimer: I've done Adwords for about 8 yrs, read heaps on QS and all you'll ever find is speculation. The above are my personal experiences. Google once published a paper on their view on QS, their view basically is 'don't focus on QS but on quality instead'
