QUESTION: Right Column VS. News Feed: What's the difference?
Hello all, extremely new here (signed up only a few days ago).
I've done a bit of searching here regarding FB's NewsFeed ads and haven't found much info. Of course I realize I could've missed something.
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has been using the NewsFeed ad placement whether in tandem with right column or on it's own and if you could give any tips on how to utilize this relatively new tool.
--
My own observations so far have been:
/////
Before moving forward, for anyone who has not used these yet, you MUST have a fan page of some sort to link to in order to place ads on the NewsFeed.
Goes like:
Your FB Fan Page Link here: Main Ad Copy Here
Pic (154x154):Outbound Link: Secondary Ad Copy here
/////
- I do social media updates for a client so I normally use these for pushing posts out to more people or gaining new likes, which at that these work beautifully.
- I've yet to see any ROI on a few aff-links I've played around with.
- CTR's are ridiculously high 4% on the high-end to .1% on the low
I've actually seen 20% in the first few minutes of a campaign before heh, though that usually goes down once impressions rise.
- Problems with this are, you get charged for link clicks and page clicks (also likes).
- I currently don't have the cash flow to test this out thoroughly or even scale anything that would show promise.
One other thing to note, I'm definitely seeing a discrepancy in link clicks on FB and the Unique clicks on my aff-account. I.E. - 2 Link Click w/ 9 Page Clicks on FB with 15-16 Unique clicks shown on my aff-account. Confusing to say the least.
Please share any info you have on this and and we can conquer this beast together!

So I think I'm a bit confused regarding likes counting towards clicks.
Just did an overall click count between my fb campaigns & my affiliate site and they match up just fine.
Also found out the specific name for these types of ads "Page Post Link" Ads.
They look like this in the feed:

Now I might be talking out of my ass here - I'm also extremely tired yet I can't sleep, heh - but it seems as though only link clicks are being charged and any page engagement is not.
I also found this study released by nanigans a couple months ago showing off these interesting numbers:
ROI
- Page post link ads delivered a 53% ROI
- Page post photo ads delivered a 24% ROI
- Page post ad units delivered a 26X higher ROI than RHS
Engagement & Costs
- Page post photo ads had a 37% higher CTR than Page post link ads and a 20X higher CTR than RHS
- Page post photo ads had on average a 17% lower CPC than Page post link ads and RHS
Actions & Purchases
- Page post link ads had a 30% higher action rate than Page post photo ads
- Page post link ads had a 55% higher purchasing user rate than Page post photo ads and a 61% higher purchasing user rate than RHS

I'd take anything regarding the profitability of FB ad types disseminated by Nanigans or any similar companies with a grain of salt. They are not affiliate marketers and a lot of their data is brand-centric, i.e. focuses on the social media activity of brands, businesses and so on. A lot of these ad types don't allow you to track specific users follow-on actions so it's not like you can start a campaign for your page that pushes affiliate offers and have any idea whether your sponsored page post or sponsored page like ad created revenue. I'm not sure if the new FB conversion pixels have added any help here. There are ways to pass variables to URLs inside page posts but I am unsure if this is even available through the native interface.
These ad units are great for building an audience to your page though. Need fanpage likes? Images. Large images in the news feed are kings when it comes to getting peoples eyeballs. As for how other ad units perform for garnering likes, comments, shares, etc., you'd need to test. Getting likes for $0.01 is easy but it's monetising the page successfully afterward that takes a game plan and some consistency in keeping the fans engaged. There is also the Edgerank crap, hell if I have a clue what's going on there.
As for your comment about charges for page engagement vs likes it may depend on when the user does it. If people click like on the ad unit it is probably going to cost you. If they click the ad it will probably cost you. If they click share it will probably cost you since this is an action. (Not 100% sure with all these right now). However, once they click the ad and land on your page any actions from then are unlikely to be charged as they are not interacting with an ad unit.

Thanks for the insight zeno.
It would be great to test out, however my cash flow is nowhere near the level it would need to be to test it thoroughly.
I guess the takeaway from this for me would be that I should just stick to the right column for now.

Glad it helped. Also, the new mobile app install/suggested app ads are pretty tasty, but I believe you need to direct link to the app store thus could only make them work if direct with an advertiser.

Or if you've created your own app, of course... Which is definitely an under-explored, if non-trivial, way to promote offers.

By page engagement, do you mean "liking/sharing" the page?

What is the diff between link ad and photo ad? Don't they all contain a photo?

I've been seeing ads that link to a Facebook App that then automatically redirects to a non-Facebook landing page. They must be working because I have been seeing them consistently for a few weeks.
