Silly to hire a PPC expert? (11)

Silly to hire a PPC expert?

I'm so busy with other projects that I really don't know why I thought I had the time for all this STM stuff.

If I hire a PPC expert for $300 a month do you think this would be worth it? Should be, no? If I decide to run a big campaign? Those agencies that do Facebook ads all day could probably get me a high CTR and super low CPC as they can play around with the ads all day.

Is this for your own products, or affiliate campaigns?

If it's for affiliate campaigns, I'd be pretty concerned about any "expert" I hired just walking off with my successful campaigns. After all, there's nothing stopping them duplicating them after they've spent your money optimising them out...

If it's for your own products, hiring a PPC consultant could work - but you'll want to be very sure they have actual expertise in running conversion-focused campaigns. There are a lot more people claiming to be marketing experts out there than there are actual marketing experts.

Hey caurmen,

Thanks for your response. It is for an affiliate campaign and I had that exact concern too. I could essentially not tell them how much payout I was getting, where the affiliate offer was hosted to signup, etc. If their job is to improve campaigns and get further jobs, I'm sure they won't run off. Especially on something like Elance where I can leave a very negative review. If they were so good at PPC they would be doing their own affiliate campaigns.

Do you recommend anyone in specific?

Hiring someone to run campaigns for you will ONLY work if you have the exact campaign recipe by figuring it out yourself already.

If you're hiring someone to test campaigns for you it absolutely will not work. 1/10,000 chance.

Why do you say that? The same way I'm testing with images, etc, can't they do the same? Isn't that their job?

Even with the big agencies who know what they're doing?

I think the key point here is that you care about making the campaigns a success because it's your time/money that's pissed up the wall if things don't work out.

A PPC expert on the other hand picks up their monthly retainer whatever happens (unless you strike a performance related pay agreement).

In my opinion only you can give it the attention to detail that's needed - and like caurmen said, what's stopping the PPC expert running your campaign into the ground and using your data to kick off their own money spinning venture?

In the words of Simon Cowell, it's a no from me. Try and find time to do it yourself.

Whichever route you take, I wish you the best of luck!

Interesting topic.

As a newbie to PPC, I've thought about hiring a PPC expert to drive traffic to a product I own.

In my case, the deal would be, I'll give all the money to run the campaigns, and they get to keep the money as an affiliate.

Are there any holes in this?

P.S. Obviously, the ideal situation is to be able to run my own profitable campaigns, and that's what I hope STM will help me do

There's no reason for someone to run an affiliate campaign for you when they could just run it themselves. Especially for only $300 a month. What do they say that gets you?

If they're truly a PPC expert it won't be hard for them to figure out that you're just an affiliate and that they can make a lot more money be running the offer themselves.

If you owned your own product and wanted to hire someone to do the PPC you certainly could do that but I doubt you'll find anyone to do it for a set cost. Typically they'll want rev share, a CPA or a percentage of the ad spend.

I've tried hiring a "PPC Expert" to take care of Adwords for one of my properties, and it was a big fail. They know how to send you nice reports, do the basics, but didn't help my bottom line one bit.

Maybe I'm a bit cynical, but if they are such experts why don't they just run their own shit, instead of worrying about small monthly retainers?

If I were to do it again, I would invest time into training someone from scratch to do exactly what I want them to do.

If someone's amazing at running PPC campaigns why would they settle for $300/month? That's peanuts when they could make $1000s.

Jay.
