Hey guys, I'm moving onto Facebook after having some success on other traffic sources. I'm doing pretty well on POF and PPV, but it's time to move onto a source that has real room to scale.
I've got a decent budget to get started with, so that won't be an issue. I also have a $2k limit on my personal account due to some tests I ran a couple of years ago.
Although I know much more about dating offers I'm going to start with international gaming. It seems to have a much lower chance of getting banned, which is important for my main account. Once I know how to reliably setup new accounts I'll probably start doing some dating too.
I'm also a gamer myself so I know a little about the market.
Goal: $100 profit day
Questions:
I'm just starting to promote on FB too and went with the Gaming vertical cause I also don't want to put my 2K account in jeopardy.
Best of luck!
Day 1
Offer: Miramagia DE on WSM
Payout: $2.50 (DOI)
Targeting:
Female
18-21
Germany
Precise keywords of games
CPC bidding, suggested bid is $0.18-0.44. I started at $0.40
Audience of 40,000
It's a "cute" game so I'm going to target Females 18-21. I want to target related games but there aren't too many that are very similar, aside from games like Flyff or Maple Story which aren't that popular in comparison to mainstream games. So I went a bit broader with targeting and added lots of RPGs.
I'm testing 10 images to start with to get an idea of the CTRs I can get. The copy is very basic but I've had it translated. Once I've found some images that work I'll try a few different angles.
I've put all the ads in the same campaign but paused it until they are all approved. Should I split them up into separate campaigns in the future?
See how big the audiences are when you target casual FB games like Farmville etc.
@zeno – thanks for the tip, I hadn't even thought of targeting FB apps.
@exaltedmoon – I'm definitely going to split up creatives from now on as you suggest, most of my ads didn't get impressions yesterday. When you say bid outside the suggest bid do you mean above the range to get impressions faster?
Day 2
Stats for yesterday:
Spend: $6.56
Revenue: $5.00
P/L: -$1.56
Spend was very low yesterday for the 18-21 female DE campaign and I didn't come close to spending my budget. I'm guessing this was due to low CTR. I did have a couple of conversions which is encouraging.
Average CTR was 0.045%, but only four of the ten ads received any impressions. When I paused those four ads to let the others have a chance I just stopped getting impressions completely.
I split the 6 ads without impressions into separate campaigns to see how they perform. Since then I've barely received any impressions on all of the campaigns, very frustrating!
Next step for this campaign is to make an entirely new batch of (hopefully) higher CTR images and test them in their own campaigns. I'm also going to add some Facebook apps to targeting – I should be able to double the audience size this way.
I've also setup a couple of new campaigns today promoting two different games, one in Germany and one in Denmark. The German campaign has just been approved, I'm waiting for the Danish translation from one hour translations.
Campaign 2 – German Action MMO
Payout: $2.60
Targeting:
Male
18-21
Germany
Precise keyword targeting major MMOs, Audience of just under 100k
I've used images of female characters, but avoided cleavage in all but one of the ads. Even that one is what I consider to be a "safe" amount of cleavage, but it's still waiting for approval. I've also mixed in a few random images of fighting etc.
The estimated bid is 0.18-0.32, so I've bid 0.40 to try and get some impressions.
Good luck Alex - if you're targeting men try an image of a women in a car. That works really well. The more amateur the better!
I ran an Xbox One campaign and managed 3% CTR with this trick.
Jay.
great follow along so far! subscribed!
Appreciate the business Alex - if you need any help getting these campaigns going at all feel free to hit me up on Skype. Jeremiah.Cooper
Day 3
Spend: $11.82
Revenue: $2.50
P/L: -$9.32
Not much to report today, spend was still very low yesterday although I've had a few new campaigns approved now. I'd like to be spending a lot more than this, but I'm guessing when ads have low CTR the impressions dry up quickly.
Average CTR has been disappointing – my best ad has a CTR of 0.04% which is way too low. I think this is because I've been just targeting gamers with as many MMOs, FPS games etc I can think of. I get a larger audience but in hindsight these probably aren't the right gamers for a cute free to play browser game!
I've setup three new campaigns for the same offer today, all targeting females, 18-21 in Germany but tried to be more creative with angles. Each of the three campaigns is a different angle with different ads, copy and targeting – hopefully I can improve CTR that way.
I've also just started using AdsWorkshop – it makes it a lot easier to put each ad in its own campaign.
I tend to think of the ad "flow" in terms of AIDA: Attention, Interest, Desire, Action.
Attention: "Good lord, those women have large breasts." (image, MAYBE headline)
Interest: "Apparently there is a site where I can have intimate encounters with ladies whose breasts are of significant size." (Image headline and text)
Desire: "My word, some of those fillies are indeed pretty fine. Where do I sign up?" (Landing page and offer page)
Action: "My email is..." (CA-CHING!)
what made you decide to target young women?
@alex
Looking at the stats below, try targeting "older males"....if you had Alexa Pro you'll have a better idea of the demo on who plays that game.

Awesome dude I'm interested in this, Gaming is evergreen so looking forward to watching your results keep it coming!
@adrian - I didn't think about it too much, I just thought that demo was a good fit with the offer and I wanted to test a small group first.
@punkcash - that's interesting, looks like males are definitely worth testing.
Day 4
Spend: $67.26
Revenue: $55.66
P/L: -$11.6
Day 5
Spend: $56.31
Revenue: $54.30
P/L: -$2.01
Day 6
Spend: $39.73
Revenue: $53.73
P/L: +$14.00
I've finally managed to spend some more over the last few days and revenue has been OK. These are small spend campaigns because I'm testing 3-4 different offers now in a variety of countries, but I'm happy with how things are progressing.
I've been splitting ads up into their own campaigns with $5 budgets, and culling ads that are <0.1% CTR and not profitable after a few thousand impressions. Now that I've got some winning ads, I'm going to slowly increase the budgets by $5 increments. Is it OK to do that multiple times throughout the day or should I just do it at the start of each day?
I'm also conscious that I'm targeting mainly women age 18-21, so I want to get some older campaigns going soon to try and avoid quality issues.
The plan today is to get some new campaigns setup, and test some variations of my best images to try and increase CTR further.
Day 7
Spend: $86.36
Revenue: $69.17
P/L: -$17.19
I was testing some new campaigns (targeting males) today which failed badly. I'm finding females much easier to target at the moment.
In terms of demo size, most of my campaigns are around the 50k mark, which seems small. How long would you expect creatives to last before burning out with a demo that size?
If anyone has any advice on this I'd appreciate it
Thanks!
Day 8
Spend: $93.25
Revenue: $81.32
P/L: -$11.93
At this stage I think I just need to test as many images as I can and try and get consistently over 0.2% CTR. At the moment my best ads are around 0.12%, which isn't bad but isn't pushing down my CPCs enough to get above breaking even.
I'm trying to sign up for spy accounts but after adding a few friends, interests, games etc and waiting 24 hours ads still aren't showing up, even on the ad board. Is that normal? Is there a way to force facebook to show ads to a new account?
Keep an eye on your conversion rates for each creative, too - by now you should have 15k impressions or more on some creatives, I'm guessing, which is enough to start cutting based on conversion rate.
Day 9
Spend: $50.80
Revenue: $46.45
P/L: -$4.35
Another day at close to break even. My ads are burning out rapidly - will that level off after a couple of days? Or is the demo size of around 50k too small?
@caurmen - I've got a couple of ads that have a nice ROI so I've continued with those and paused the others. Out of the three offers I've tested only one has consistently converted, so I'm sticking with that. I've also uploaded some variations of the winning ads (borders etc).
I'm away for the weekend but I'll pick up this follow along next week. Have a good weekend everyone!
Day 15
I'm back from holiday and ready to start working hard again. I left my profitable ads running this week, and I've gone from a small profit down to around break even due to the ad CTRs steadily dropping. The game I'm promoting is still converting well - I just need to find better images.
I won't put all my stats in here as they are all around the same for the last few days - a few dollars profit or break even.
Question: Are ads for a demo size of <50k always going to burn out in a few days? I've had ads start with a CTR of around 0.2% only to steadily drop to less than 0.1%. Is that just a normal decline from the ads being fresh to finding their normal CTR?
I've tested about 30 images, each in their own campaign for a fair test. I'm starting to wonder whether my angle isn't strong enough.
Plan for the next few days: Keep testing new images for the offer that's working, and maybe test a few new angles too. Start testing some other games targeted at male users.
What frequency are you seeing on your ads? That's a good guide as to whether or not you may be in burnout territory.
@Caurmen One of the ads has a frequency of around 18, I'm guessing that's pretty high?
Ouch - yep, that's high. That means that FB users have seen it 18 times - enough for it to start burning out, IMO.
Hey alexpte, i have a qusetion: I run France offer on facebook, the offer just exists in France. If i visit the offer through US IP, it will display the other offer. Now, let me trouble is that when my ads have been approved, I will find that the facebook ads show the other offer' web url, is not I will promotion of the site url. Do you have the trouble? thank you!
Great work. Looking forward to your progress.
@Caurmen OK that's good to know, thanks. This is a very small demo so I knew it would burn out quick, I just didn't realise it would be THAT quick
@vokesdil If you setup a geo redirect (user from your target country goes to the offer URL, anyone else is sent to the final offer page) then that won't happen.
@quantum27 thanks!
Stats for today:
Spend: $39.11
Revenue: $13.50
P/L: - 25.61
Not much to report today, I feel like I haven't made much progress over the last week or so as I've been focusing on some other campaigns. That will change for the rest of this week though.
I tested a load of new images on a much larger demo for the offer that was converting the best. I didn't find any images over 0.1% CTR so I think my angle isn't strong enough. The offer also didn't convert as well with this larger demo unfortunately.
I also tested another offer to see if it converted well. No conversions after around 30 clicks on a $1.50 payout so probably not going to work, although I'm not writing it off completely just yet.
lol at entertaining commentary
Sorry for the lack of updates, but good news!
Yesterday's stats:
Spend: $223.22
Revenue: $329.75
P/L: +$106.53
This all came from one campaign in one country, so the potential for scaling is huge.
I hit my cap on this offer yesterday which sucks. Hoping to get that removed or at least increased (fingers crossed that the quality will hold up otherwise it's back to square one).
I haven't updated this follow along as much as I wanted to, but quite quickly the updates would have been "tested new offers, brainstormed some new angles, tested more images" etc. If anyone has any questions I'll try and answer them though - even though I'm still learning a lot on FB.
Thanks for everyone who helped in this thread!
Question.. have you had any issues with accounts being closed or locked by promoting gaming on FB as an affiliate? And have you hit your daily spend a few days in a row to get your increase yet?
Good job!
Thanks for your answers Alexpte
