[MOBILE] A new Hop (18)

[MOBILE] A new Hop

I guess that title would work best if I was doing CB products, but that's not the case sooooo...

MOVING TO MOBILE

aka "being mobile"

I've been on POF for the last 3 months, and it's been a great success. I made XXXX revenue and didn't lose too much in the end! Any experience is positive, even if no profit in the end.

I got some serious burn out with POF, so I took a couple days off and decided I needed to start something new and exciting... MOBILE

Seriously, I know it's possible to make XXX, or even >$1000/day with POF.

But:

1) Who knows, maybe those guys would be making 5 figures/day if they were on a bigger traffic source (actually I'm sure they are trying other sources...)

2) My brain works better if I can make statistically significant decisions on my campaigns pretty much every day. I like to micromanage and know what's going on. The way I was doing POF, I ended up with dozens of campaigns for the same offer and it got confusing.

So... let's get started now!!!!11one2

Day 1

Offers:

My AM recommended some INTL antivirus offers. Good idea?

What should I know about getting creatives and LPs approved? seems like my Aff network wants them approved every time. Is that standard? Should I just share everything and not worry about it?

Traffic Sources

I'd like to start with only 1 source to make things simple

Here's my shortlist: Inmobi, Airpush, Jumptap

What's a good one for European offers and for a newbie?

I was thinking Jumptap at first because it has good "tracking" and was recommended by The Angry Russian. But is it true that it's mostly US traffic? I want to do INTL offers

So I was thinking Airpush because I have Android offers that accept push traffic... But will what I learn on Airpush translate to other sources?

Any recommendation?

Tracking

Mobaff tracker obviously. I wonder if they support landing page/offer rotation?

Landing Pages

I'll probably start by direct linking. Then probably some landing page with some "you have a virus" message.

Testing Budget

Not sure what I should use. Maybe $50/day per campaign with 3 campaigns? Would that be a good structure?

Thanks for all the upcoming replies!

antivirus apps are difficult to get approved..at least on the traffic sources you mentioned.but they do convert no doubt. but it's not the best niche if you are just starting out and want to learn mobile traffic. hopping from traffic source to traffic source is difficult but i agree that there is more (scaling) potential with mobile.

my suggestion:

you came from POF so i guess you ran dating offers there..how about running dating app installs or simple adult/casual leadgens? they are easy to convert and it's a good way to learn how the adnetworks/baners work. if you need offer suggestions for europe or cpa network refs pm me. if you can make them work i can hook you up with direct contacts aswell ;-)
and doing a follow along is a good idea..that will speed up the learning process..just don't reveal too much. (don't post your best banners..post a similar one for example) copycats gonna copycat. they are like rats.

yeah I guess dating would make sense... if anyone has some suggestions for offers hit me up...

Is it ok to run offers such as benaughty, xdating on traffic sources such as inmobi/jumptab? I'm used to the POF standards so I'm not sure what I can run where.

start with direct linking offers on mobile if you're just starting out mainly to find out the responses on each mobile networks and also allows you to spend more time on contacting / liaising with reps early on, which helps alot later

Here we go... Waiting on ads/deposit to be approved now.

CAMPAIGN #1
Offer: Dating offer for a euro country
Payout: 2.25, SOI
Tracking: Mobaff
Ad network: undisclosed for now
Ads: made 11 ads, 300*50, 4 templates (edit: +1 text ad to try it out)
Direct Linking at first
Bid: 0.05 to start
NO WIFI, NO APPS (at least for now)
OS: iphone/android
Budget (allocated on network): $50/day

Interestingly this offer/country combination is not being run on my Aff Network. But I thought I'd give it a try since the equivalent web offer is running some good volume.

I'll probably launch more in the next few days after seeing what happens with this one... the first one is always the hardest

Turn off Blackberry too

Interesting set up I'm looking forward to your results mate.

Interestingly this offer/country combination is not being run on my Aff Network. But I thought I'd give it a try since the equivalent web offer is running some good volume.
You'll never know till you test !

Just realized that all the traffic on that ad network for this specific country is WIFI (according to their stats). Is that a dealbreaker?

07-27-2013 05:06 AM #9 maynzie (Moderator)

Ahh most likely yeah, wifi is not the greatest.

If you're the only one running this country with this offer, run a small test you never know and you might be leaving a golden stone unturned, always pays to test but wifi is generally not the greatest

OK so my dating campaign is launched! I ended up trying another traffic source that has some carrier traffic.

And I have the answer to a crucial question:

Does the offer convert? YES
500 visits, 1 lead... woohoo

Ads

CTR: 0.6%.... Ranging from 0.34% to 0.87% after 4000 imps

Interestingly the ad with 0.87% got the conversion... Could be the winning angle so far.

OS

90% Android, 10% iOS... interesting

Conclusion so far?

I guess it's gonna be hard to cut carriers/os/handsets if it doesn't convert more than that.

So far I've spend maybe 12 times the payout... Something doesn't seem right but it's not like I got much data from that.

Maybe a landing page would help? Or should I run more data to get a better idea of how things convert first?

07-28-2013 07:28 PM #11 dingdong (Member)

So I checked on a proxy and the offer doesn't seem to auto-detect the local language. I don't think that will help...

EDIT: switched the traffic to another offer

I would definitely share what network you're using if you really want to get good advice. Every network out there has its own nuances as to how to best optimize.

Mobile tends to have a pretty high barrier to entry as you've already seen in wasted ad spend while you figure things out. The flip side is that once you get profitable your campaigns tend to last longer with less theft.

Good luck

Been running on MMedia...

I also have $ on Mobfox but haven't run anything there yet.

I like that those two sites allow to filter out siteIDs without asking a rep. The only thing with MMedia is that it doesn't seem possible to filter out app traffic (other than filtering out siteIDs)

Thanks for dropping by Alex! I was in touch with Josh about getting into your aff network and we agreed that I needed to get some experience first. He suggested Mmedia and JT. I went for MMedia because JT is more US based from what I've heard.

Set up 2 new campaigns, pending approvals...

Campaign #2

Network: MMedia
Offer: dating app
Payout: 45c
Direct Linking
OS: Android only
Initial Testing budget: $20/day
Bid: 5c CPC
Excluding WIFI

Campaign #3
Network: Mmedia
Offer: dating
Payout:2.60
Target: feature phones
CPC: 5cents
Carrier traffic only
Direct Linking for now
Starting Daily budget: $20/day
NO WIFI

Hopefully one of these gets some conversions, so we can get some data to work with!

I learned from my mistakes and set the daily budgets to $20 so I don't end up spending $70 on an offer that doesnt convert like with campaign #1!

Jumping in here w a Q, when do you disable Wifi? As a rule turn it off, or is it more for offers with pin submit.

07-30-2013 03:53 PM #16 dingdong (Member)

From what I understand disabling WIFI as a rule is a good idea. Could be worth testing though depending on the offer.

07-30-2013 10:15 PM #17 dingdong (Member)

So I tried to run http://www.clubm8.com/ on MMedia but got denied. Is this typical on non-adult mobile ad networks?

07-31-2013 12:40 AM #18 dingdong (Member)

Still nothing running at the moment...

CAMPAIGN #4

Source: MMedia
Offer: dating
Country: USA
Targeting: Smartphones, Android/ios, no WIFI
Ads: 10 ads 320*50 (is 300*50 better? should I do both?)

Initial budget: $20/day
CPA: $2
CPC: 5cents
