Headlines can make a huge difference

Hey guys,

Without giving too much info away, I want to share some insights with you guys regarding the importance of split testing headlines.

This campaign I've been running is for Italy and I'm buying media on a popunder network. Now, here's a good tip already, I've found that using a Javascript alert box makes a really big difference. It's basicly an "extra" headline you can use before the user sees the actual landing page.

The offer is a "Win an iPhone 5" offer and I've build a survey LP in front of it. I tested 3 different headlines for the alert box, being the following:

  1. We would like to offer you the chance to WIN an iPhone 5 if you can answer our survey.
  2. Do you have time to answer our 5 questions? You can WIN an iPhone 5!
  3. Get a chance to WIN an iPhone 5 after answering our questions!

Now, the results:

As you can see this headline (LP IT3) "Get a chance to WIN an iPhone 5 after answering our questions!" outperformed the other 2 in terms of CTR AND in terms of CR.

Always test! Such small differences can make or break a campaign.

"There are 4 important qualities that a good headline may possess. They are: Self Interest, News, Curiosity, Quick, easy way." -- John Caples, pioneer in copy testing and many a marketer's wet dream.

1) We'd like to bla bla bla - this headline is about we not me. NEXT! (self interest)
2) Do you have time.....NO! who has time to keep reading this headline much less fill out the survey? (quick, easy way)
3) Win an ipad, short sweet and direct. Ding ding ding! Self interested AND it's quick 'n easy. #WinnerWinnerTofuDinner

Nice work Mo'Scito, good share and conversation starter!

Wow I'm pretty surprised those headlines varied so much. I usually test a few different pages and just keep the winner and a lot of times testing stops there. I think in the future I should really start testing small variations on the winning page and see if I can keep increasing CTR and conversions.

Copywriting is always such an interesting subject...

The third line seems to ring home with more people because it represents a level of authenticity. "Believability" is key to headlines today as many headlines seem to shout and yell exaggerated claims.

Incredible the difference that a simple headline change can make.

haha just like the all time winner...

"This site contains explicit photos of Someone... bla bla bla"

No matter how many headlines I split tested, this one always outperform the rest. Besmir maybe you guys should change the sales letter headline of STM to...

"This Site contains sexually explicit photos of Lorenzo, Besmir, and Jordan" and watch the sign up rate increase by 20-30%. Just my 2 cent
