Day 1:
Ok, I've decided to stick with 1 traffic source for the next 30 days. I've chosen AdIQuity.
I'll be tracking my stats with MobAff Tracker.
The offer I'll start off with is a Battery Saver app targeting Mexico.
Done:
- Set up and fund AdIQuity account
- Set up MobAff Tracker
- Create first campaign and upload creatives
To Do:
- Create and upload some more creatives
Questions:
- For a battery app, should I test using an lp or just stick with direct linking for now?
Definitely direct link. I wouldn't bother with landers right off the bat for a battery saver app.
Day 2:
Thanks for the advice above. I'll stick with direct linking and see where I can take this!
Done:
- First campaign approved on AdIQuity and starting to gather stats.
- Installed GIMP and worked through a tutorial on making animated gifs. Added some animated gif banners to my campaign.
- Added some text ads to campaign.
- Sent an email to AdIQuity account manager asking for some tips for increasing traffic
To Do:
- Create campaigns for some other countries (maybe Argentina next).
- Create a campaign targeting just WIFI traffic (I've excluded it in previous campaigns)
- Wait on some more data before I start to cut carriers, devices, and creatives
Questions:
- I need some advice on when to start cutting creatives, carriers, and devices. I'm thinking that I don't have enough data yet but any tips are greatly appreciated. The offer has a 0.26 payout.
Stats (last two days):
- See attachments
I'm not an expert on mobile, but my understanding is that you probably want to start by cutting carriers and devices first. Once you have an idea of which of those convert, you can probably move on to other cuts.
As for when to cut them: again, I'm not a mobile-specialised guy, but I'd recommend getting to at least a reasonable level of statistical significance - here's a calculator.
Currently I'd say you don't have enough data - if one of the carriers wasn't converting at all, you could probably cut it after a hundred or so clicks, but given everything's converting to at least some extent, you'll need to give it some time for EPCs to converge on a solid figure.
Day 3:
Thanks for the tips and the link to the statistical significance calculator. I'm waiting a few more days on these campaigns to gather some more data. Today I got 1650 clicks but only 14 conversions (EPC ~ 0.002) so I have some optimizing to do!
I've been getting more familiar with MobAff Tracker and I'm really liking the interface and how easy it is to set up a campaign.
Done:
- Found out that the average CPC for my targeting on AdIQuity is $0.07. Not sure if I can go that high with this offer.
- Also found that about 10% of my clicks are coming from Apple devices even though I specified Android OS in my campaign targeting. Checking to see if I can exclude devices on AdIQuity.
- Created campaign for Argentina but found out there's not much Android volume there - pausing my Argentina campaign for now.
To Do:
- Check if frequency capping is available on AdIQuity.
- Create a campaign targeting just WIFI traffic (I've excluded it from my other campaigns)
- Look for some more obscure countries for this offer. The hunt is on!
- Need to add some different banner sizes to existing campaigns - I'm currently only running two different banner sizes.
Day 4:
Stats after 7,477 clicks and 133 conversions...
Carriers EPC range: 0.002 - 0.006
Placements EPC range: 0.005 - 0.015
Devices EPC range: 0.006 - 0.015
Creatives EPC range: 0.003 - 0.008
My current CPC for this campaign is 0.02
Total Spend - $140.10
Total Revenue - $34.84
Does it make sense to continue optimizing this campaign? I'm thinking that one of the main problems with this campaign is my creatives.
Question: After getting enough data to analyze, how do you optimize if the EPC of the carriers, placements, devices, and banners are all not profitable? Do you move on to the next campaign? I guess what I'm curious about is how do you know when to move on. I don't want to move on too early but I don't want to spend my time on something that won't work (80/20 rule).
If you eliminated all devices and/or carriers except the ones giving you the highest EPC, would you be left with enough volume to make the campaign worth continuing with? Also, are the higher-EPC devices or carriers close to statistical significance yet?
My hunch (and once again, I'm not mobile-specialised, so this is just general principles stuff) is that if you'd have decent volume left over after eliminating the low-paying options, it's probably worth keeping going with this campaign for a bit.
Adiquity is pretty rough traffic source... I applaud you for the effort
Think of mobile marketing as a marketplace. I don't subscribe to the 1 traffic source idea, this worked great with Facebook, POF, Google but in mobile with so many vendors its best to do scatter to see where you're more likely to break even. Every ad network is going to have different inventory and at different pricing, you're just trying to find a match for your offer that gets you closest to break even and that will require the minimal optimization to keep your volumes up.
Also, I don't know what offer you're running but there are a few battery saver apps out there and they all perform differently depending on who is the advertiser and what network it is on.
Getting 30% of your ad spend while testing isn't terrible, there may be opportunity there with better creatives and targeting, but that is your call based on your budget.
