My first follow along - My second dating campaign on FB

Hi guys,

This is my first real thread after my introduction.
It's going to be great learning from you guys (and girls)!

Until now I have had one campaign which made me a little money, but still a negative ROI. It was more of a test campaign to see how facebook ads work, my niche was small (30.000 people since I was only targeting Dutch people). So I feel like most people have already seen my ad and there is not enough interest.

Now I'm planning on going for a bigger potential market, women.
It's going to be difficult to think from a women mindset but if you can succeed with women it is valuable knowledge and good for the dating service you are promoting.

I picked one of the larger dating websites in Holland:
•I'm working one angle (a very basic one of which I'd knew FB would accept)
•Direct linking only
•8 different images (I read a while ago that women tend to like profile pictures with a man that doens't look into the camera, looks more occupied, therefor more attractive. Also a man with a cute pet scores points. Time to test this theory.)
•My demo is of about 180K
- All the women from 20-35, single or unknown, intersted in men.

I started this morning with a bid of about €0,91

My stats so far are:

Ad*1 to *6
•Nothing so far

Ad*7
•Reach 3044 people
•Freq 1,5
•Clicks 1
•CTR 0,022%
•Spent €0,80
•ROI: -100%

Ad*8
•Reach 9045 people
•Freq 2,3
•Clicks 7
•CTR 0,033%
•Spent €3,18
•ROI: -100%

This sucks!

Can anybody tell me if it's better to work on the angle right now, or keep searching for a better image or make my demo more specific?

Also, for most dating sites in Holland people must take 10 minutes of their time to fill in BS tests. I think this is the reason why most people don't convert. Anybody knows how to tackle this problem??

Much apreciated!
Guido

I have been tracking my ads over the weekend and it didn't do much.
A max CTR of 0,045 and no conversions.

So after two days without any good CTR I stopped all 8 ads.

Together with my girlfriend we browsed for pictures of men that she thought would be interesting. (lucky girl)
So it was time for round 2.
8 new pictures, that we thought would do good.
But this time even lower conversions

Now I created 4 more ads with new pictures and a new angle, more towards the personality test that you have to do when you sign up. Let's see what is going to happen!?

Good stuff! Keep us updated - interested to hear how this progresses.

20-35 is a large demo to test with one batch of ads. When I think of the 20 year old women I know (sadly not many), they would definitely shoot for a different guy to the 35 year old women I know (...sadly not many).

Divide in to age brackets of five and adjust your images accordingly.

If you're new to advertising on FB, don't try creating your own angles, ad copy AND sourcing your own images at the same time. Too many variables. Set up a fake account under the demographic you're targeting and see what ads are already popular. Copy them and see what stats you get. That's your baseline. Then see what you can do to improve it.

I would recommend buying finch's premium posts if you want a better understanding on how you should target your audience.

It helped me a lot. I even made notes and printed them out for future reference.

Hey Finch, thanks for helping me out!

I have made several new facebook accounts, even befriended everybody with eachother, so the look like real people. But it seems like FB doesn't target newcomers with ads. Strange.

Anyway, I tried dividing the demo in age brackets on my other campaign and this campaign. For my other campaign it worked like magic!! Got a CTR of 1,95 with the first 5 clicks in a certain age range. This will go down for sure, but still it really motivates you to keep testing and trying!
For my female target group, it didn't work out as I hoped. I think the female demographic is much harder to crack, but I won't give up.
The only Bad news is, is that my Aff manager told me that the client doesn't want their Ads on facebook anymore. I just wrote them an email with my planning so maybe they can make an exception for me, because I'm an honest guy . (for now)

I am now going to start with a different offer from scratch.
My plan is to first test a lot of different images with all the different age brackets. When I find the right images I'm going to try different angles and copies. If I get that down, I'm going to build a lander to convert all the ladies.
Is this a good plan, or do you advice me to do differently?
