Dedicated server in EU - recommendations?

I'm looking for recommendations concerning dedicated servers in Europe.

I did some reseach & these companies seem to be ok:
Leaseweb
SoftLayer

Please post your recommendations & experiences.

Thanks!

leaseweb is excellent.. I can vouch for them.

Also, a cheaper but reasonably fast option.. use Burstnet.eu premium VPS.. http://www.burstnet.eu/premiumvps.shtml

I have one from package 4.. very fast and loaded with a bunch of different IPs on request..

The budget ones at burst are pretty slow.. I have one also for some blogs I run, but very happy with the premium one.

My number 1 recommendation in the EU continues to be Bytemark - www.bytemark.co.uk. I've been with them for a decade now and they're pretty damn awesome.

http://www.hetzner.de/ are also reputed to be very good indeed - and their dedi servers are absurdly cheap. i7 with 32Gb of RAM for 59 Euro a month? Yes, please.

That's a damn cheap server for that spec!

So beyond hosting is more ideal for US?

We have dedicated servers at Softlayer (Amsterdam) - great support. Semi-expensive but very reliable!

@caurmen : are hetzner.de really own the datacenter which hosted their servers ?

@hd2010 - I don't honestly know if they own their own datacenter, although I wouldn't be surprised - they're a pretty big name. They tend to be the people who get recommended on Hacker News for serious dedicated hardware, and I know one enterprise company running actual social media AI stuff for Fortune 500-scale companies with them.

Most of these dedis install cpvlab for you?

I wouldn't think so, no - although they probably could for an additional fee. Certainly both Bytemark and Hetzner normally supply unmanaged boxes with nothing but the operating system.

Obviously Beyond Hosting can, but they're the only affiliate-specialised hosting company I'm aware of.

According to their website they provide datacenter for resellers as well, also being a stock company implies they're doing some huge turnover.

Hmm I got like a 70 dollar budget p/m for hosting, been opting in for beyondhosting but heard a lot of downtime with their VPS? Still not sure what to get especially after these options, although I don't know what all the differences are. Need to move away from hostgator :P Caurmen with Hetzner you recommend the 4s package? Dedi is better than vps? And I assume installing cpvlab is fairly easy?

I have a french datacenter one with these guys, been with them since 2010 and have had zero issues with them.

Check out the MG and HG dedicated servers, they piss all over beyond hostings top end servers and are 1/4 of the price.

EDIT : For your budget you could get the SP which is still a very good dedicated server if you don't plan to push too much traffic. Much better than a VPS. You need to make sure you have a decent server guy on board to set things up for you and provide support as these are not managed.

I don't see the point in paying a monthly fee for managed hosting because there are months when I don't even need to touch my server and when I do I just pay someone for their time.

philwilgrm - My answer very much depends on two things: your level of technical knowledge (how comfortable are you with installing a web server, CPVLab, etc yourself?) and the kind of volume you're pushing right now. Also, if you're not super-technical, do you have the budget to hire someone to do the setup?

Let me know those and I can give you a recommendation!

My technical knowledge isnt that great at all, im more focused on the design/photoshop side. Volume right now is nothing crazy, doing fine with hostgator but I plan to expand soon. What does it cost to hire someone? I rather not :P

Cheers Caurmen!

In that case I'd strongly recommend going for a Beyond Hosting VPS for now. That'll get everything set up and running for you without the need to hire someone. They say that the starter VPS should handle up to 30,000 clicks a day, so that'll be OK for a while.

Ok cheers! That sounds liek enough for me, once things get rolling can always upgrade ofcourse Just heard some people complain about their downtime, hope its not as bad.

Btw is CPVlab well worth to buy over using Prosper, or am I just spending more money for little improvements?

05-21-2013 10:23 AM #20 caurmen (Administrator)

If you can comfortably afford it, CPVLab is probably better, but Prosper will work perfectly well and make you plenty of money, particularly at lower volumes. I'd say only buy CPVLab if it won't significantly eat into your testing budget.
