blanking the referer
i know there are ways to do this
is it ever advantageous to do so?

Absolutely, almost everyone is blanking/hiding the referer to prevent their traffic sources and lps from being thieved. Its the norm.
Cpvlab does it for you, p202 doesn't blank but still hides your lps (it sends your tracking domain only).

it is always advantageous except on mobile where it can slow down your redirect speeds. Networks / affiliate managers / advertisers can and will steal your campaigns, it's important not to trust anyone in this industry - don't treat them with disrespect or assume they're doing it, but always cover your ass, because it can be very hard to discern who is actually legit and who is just putting on a friendly front to steal your stuff. There are so many stories of affiliates having their campaigns stolen by networks / am's / advertisers.

I do use it with CPVlab, its worth looking into ....and I second the opinion of hiding referrers. Ive had a LP slip through once and it wasnt even that bad, yet my AM was hounding me to change this and change that...even though I told em' its the same lander I used for the last 6 months. Thats just part of the business, no matter what, some will slip through the cracks but it rarely happens.

If the advertiser's staff can deduce how you drive traffic , their 100k a year sales manger will steal it fast.

Haha.... I'll never forget my AM once told me straight out ..." I promise I only want to look at your landers for compliance reasons"..... this after spending 1k a day with them.. I was like...Ummm, no.

I once signed up to a CPA Network and they asked to see my landers that made money.
I told them to tear up my app.
CPA Networks like that are a dime a dozen, don't ever let them see what works- I guarantee they will steal it.

What if the offer states landing page approval required? What do you do then

If it's a credit report offer or people media, I show them the creatives because there's no real way around it. It's all about working with networks you can trust, i.e., F5, adsim, w4, at least I personally have never had a bad experience with those 3

Good account managers have told me to show "something similar but it doesn't have to be exact" so I guess that's the best compromise you're gonna get.

thats what i normally ask for because some advertisers truly do want to see creatives just to make sure youre not using unapproved methods and ive also had to tell affiliates to block referers i know bevo media is good for this and you can actually enter a fake lp as a rferer which is cool in case you are running unapproved traffic but it backs out for the advertiser

Clarify why with your affilimama. Sometimes a representative sample is perfectly acceptable evidence that you understand 'dems da rules" and gives the aff manager confidence to vouch for you. Sometimes branded campaigns need to physically sign off on each creative themselves. And no, not because they want to rip your thrice-ripped campaign. A few advertisers (cough::eDarling, Pogo, People Media::cough) come to mind that are actively policing for their deals & withholding payment for anything they didn't clear. Can't put a price tag on brand equity for comps like Groupon & Match, and every network has lost a significant campaign or two that took a lot of TLC to secure and maintain due to an affiliates' unapproved creative liberties. Which of course only makes your am think twice before opening the next capped exclusive requiring creative approval in your account, and so the vicious cycle begins. So short story longer, clarify the purpose, and give just what you need to nothing less nothing more.

when you're checking on unapproved methods is it typically copy? images? would showing something with the stylesheet yanked out give enough idea for approval? or a text file? haven't run into this, just curious when I do.
